5.0 out of 5 stars A MASTERFUL PERFORMANCE, 13 Feb 2008
By Mrs. Therese Collins "Therese Collins" (Romford England) - See all my reviews

I must say that I totally agree with the last reviwer. All I can say is that Barenboim gives the most electrifying performance of these wonderful concertos, especially the 5th, at one stage he is trying to wipe the sweat away that is running down his face, conduct and play the piano!!!
His boundless energy and total empathy with the music is apparent from the start.

But having watched a good many DVD's of Barenboim, playing, conducting, and of course doing both together this is what I have come to expect from him, you only have to watch him conduct Mahler's 5th symphony with the Chicago S.O to see what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic!, 26 Dec 2007
By Laura Knight-Jadczyk (France) - See all my reviews

I've always loved Barenboim since my first vinyl album of his Beethoven Sonatas sang me to sleep in my teens. Having him on DVD is a magical treat!

I received the DVDs for Christmas and have spent the day after listening to (and watching) them. What an experience! The sound quality of the DVD is superb and I often get the feeling that if Barenboim didn't have to stay conscious to play and conduct, he would melt into the piano and music!

This brings up an interesting thing; a few weeks ago I bought the Askenazy DVDs of the Beethoven concertos and watched them several times, replaying some parts again and again to try to "get inside" the artist and his performance. I was never able to. Ashkenazy treats the piano as if it were something "other" than himself that must be mastered while Barenboim IS the piano!

You have to watch these DVDs to know what I mean.

I also think that the synergy between the pianist and orchestra is amazing when Barenboim is conducting AND playing! All your cells will smile! I'm not kidding, you just gotta watch it!

Pure magic!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best buy, 24 Jul 2008
By Mr. John Manning (Penarth, Vale of Glam Wales) - See all my reviews

It is sometimes said that a defendant who acts as his own lawyer in court has a fool for a client - surely something similar applies to a soloist who does his own conducting? Not if your name is Daniel Barenboim, it doesn't. And not if you have the musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin as your accompaniment; they obviously know these works intimately and have total empathy with their soloist. Whenever Barenboim has a hand free he gives direction, but for most of the time he is kept quite busy, and the orchestra manages perfectly well. As a master chef might say, the secret is in the preparation.
These performances are exceptional. There is no sense of routineness or self-consciousness, or of the performers drawing attention to themselves rather than to Beethoven. Instead there is freshnness, new insights and a concentrated musicality. I particularly love the slow movement of the fourth concerto; the orchestral strings begin hard, unyielding and insistent while Barenboim is softly serene. Eventually the piano triumphs and the strings melt into its sound world. Spine-tingling stuff.

Technically the recording is also excellent. Video quality is as good as you are likely to see from a DVD in standard definition, and the direction is impeccable. If you look carefully you may see microphones carefully placed, but there is little to draw attention to the obvious fact that the concert is being recorded. Barenboim sits with his back to the audience so that he may direct the orchestra over the top of the piano, which has had its lid removed (and also its music stand - Barenboim plays all these works from memory).
These are live performances before a large audience, but apart from applause they are very quiet. My impression is that this is achieved by using a multi-mike technique which excludes audience noise but may sometimes give a dryness to the sound. That doesn't happen here. Orchestral balance is excellent, and everything is heard clearly with a pleasant reverberation. Indeed I would go as far as to say that the overall sound quality rivals the best that I have heard on CD.
I had seen comment elsewhere about thumping noises, and listened to the first DVD (concertos 1-3) with a little trepidation as I am somewhat sensitive to that sort of problem. I noticed nothing amiss until the first movement of the fourth concerto on the second disc. There is indeed a muffled wooden knocking sound associated with Barenboim's use of the sustaining pedal, in the louder sections when he is being more enthusiastic. It is also noticeable in the last movement of the Emperor concerto. Whilst I acknowledge that it is audible, I do not feel it detracts significantly from what is an exceptional achievement, and is the only reason why I have not judged it worthy of 5 stars.
Don't hesitate. Buy it.
