Don't expect this to be anything like Haydn's late masterpieces 'The Creation' and 'The Seasons'. 'The Return of Tobias' feels like it's from a different age and apart from about three chorusus or so is much more like 'opera seria' - a sequence of very long but beautiful arias. The libretto treats the story ridiculously: if the NHS attempted to cure Tobit's blindness at this speed they would be sued for negligence. Spering's orchestra, choir and soloists are all good, and it's a recommendable purchase of a little-known byway in Haydn's output. The drama scarcely grabs you by the throat, or even the little finger, but the consummate professionalism of the composer is never in doubt. Not to be played through at one sitting however.
