Amazon.co.uk Review
Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Die Hard 4.0 finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, Dodgeball) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. Die Hard 4.0 uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, non-stop action. Yippee-ki-yay, 22 Oct 2007
By Hooligween "Rowena the Red" (Kernow, Great Britain) - See all my reviews

We were a bit wary before we watched this. Die Hards 1 and 2 were excellent but by 3 is was all getting a bit tired and run of the mill. No need to worry; even after all this time 4.0 is seriously entertaining. Some of the action scenes are so fast and hard and in-yer-face that you get breathless just watching it.
The script is plausible (cyber-terrorists bring the USA to a grinding halt for their own devious means), and John McClane has to save the day again. He also has to save a geeky hacker who might be able to unravel the online mayhem, and he has to save his grown up daughter too.

There's guns, there's shooting, there's quick-cut running and driving and shouting and -- heck, there's even a scene where Bruce takes out a helicopter (in mid air) with a car. 'My gun was out of bullets' he says, smirking.
There's plenty of one-liners, punchy dialouge and it all rattles by at a fair old pace. Bruce Willis plays the role well, too; you believe in his age and you can believe that he's just about taking the punishment. Although he doesn't strip down to his vest this time!

Great action movie, nothing too taxing for the brain cells, nothing too scary for younger kids. There's some stand-out fight scenes (especially with the guy who climbs a ventilation shaft like he's some kind of rabbit, and the karate kicking bad girl) and plenty of 'wow!' moments.
Afterwards, you might wonder about some of the plot twists -- but don't think about it too hard. Just sit back and enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars McClane is Back!.....and he kicks arse!, 5 Nov 2007

Die Hard was a milestone in testosterone fuelled filmmaking. No one remembers Die Hard 2, except as the 'rubbish, plane one'. '...Vengeance' was cracking, if a little long and slightly unfocused at times. And then Brucey took a long hiatus regarding Die Hard. Since then we have had a great many all-American heroes to pick from in his wake, and it shows in film four. The John McClane of Die Hard 4.0 is part Jack Bauer and part Jason Bourne, with another part all his own - the gruff, but lovable, armed bear that dresses in wifebeater vests and hollers 'Yippee-kay-yay MF!'. He is completely indestructible, of course, and gets beaten about pretty thoroughly in this mvie, but quite frankly you just don't care about tiny reality inadequacies. This is film as entertainment.

Tight plot: check.
Piles of action: check (the scene in the traffic tunnel,is fantastic and the line 'I was out of bullets' is guaranteed to put a slight smile on your face)
Ruthless yet charismatic bad guy: check - Timothy Olyphant and Maggie Q are perfectly cast (it'l be v interesting after this to see how well Olyphant does in Hitman!)
Sidekick: check. This was my one reservation going into the movie, but Justin Long acquits himself admirbly. No he's not a patch on Al from the original, or Samuel L. from '...Vengeance', but he holds his own and proves that he can turn the goofiness seen in Dodgeball and Accepted off and play a (fairly) straight role.

If you're an action movie fan in any way shape or fom then you could do a lot worse than Die Hard 4.0. Yes it can seem a little ridiculous (the plane chase is absurd but wonderful all the same) but that's fine. John McClane is back, and he's aged very well indeed. Get it in!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ludicrous - but fun, 27 Oct 2007
The second and third films had started to get rather dry, but this installment injects new life into the franchise. It's all there; well-constructed action sequences, amusing if not witty one-liners, plenty of implausible shooting...

The plot is, at least fundamentally, plausible; it's let down by the fact that in all particulars it's utterly nonsensical. But really, who goes to see a Die Hard film for the technical accuracy?

This isn't intended as an engineering textbook, just as a couple of hours of entertainment. And as such, it's great.
