Synopsis

Cult Spanish filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia, whose style has been said to combine those of his countrymen Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo del Toro, directs the satiric science-fiction epic ACCION MUTANTE (MUTANT ACTION). In the near future, society is divided between the rich and beautiful and the ugly and poverty-stricken. Ramon Yarritu, the leader of the terrorist organisation Mutant Action, has recently been released from prison. Angered by the failures of the organisation in his absence, he immediately launches a plot to kidnap Patricia, the lovely daughter of a wealthy bread mogul. But when the plot goes wrong, Patricia and Ramon end up crashing on the planet Axturiax, and have to look to each other for survival. ACCION MUTANTE is an over-the-top sci-fi comedy that takes a satiric look at the obsession with celebrity and appearance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Andalusian Sci-Fi Carnage (Churn Away), 9 Feb 2008
By Brady Orme (Edgbaston, England) - See all my reviews

Well, one cannot say that the World of Cinema has really ever been "inundated" with Spanish Sci-Fi : But the Iberian arts have always been dominated by the surreal, the Dadaist - From the fever-dream paintings of Dali and Miro to the eyeball-slicing antics of Luis Bunuel, Spain can do the absurb better than a Horse Wagon full of David Lynch. But what of this film itself? Is it of the same tradition? You'll have to watch it and do your own research unfortunately, as this is a bare-bones release so don't expect the Earth. Don't even expect a small Asteroid...

Alex De La Iglesia is the director, an "Enfant Terrible", the man is also responsible for the equally absurdist "800 Bullets" (also newly available, it plays like a cross between cinema verite and 'El Topo') and a prodigy of the Great Pedro Almodovar, who produces here. The movie describes a future where attractive people rule society with an iron fist; "Mutant Action", led by Ramon Yarritu kidnap the daughter of wealthy industrialist Orujo (at her wedding, natch) for ransom. Pursued to the planet Axturiax for a perceived swap , the deranged Yarritu kills his fellow terrorists one-by-one in order to keep the ill-gotten gains for himself - It would be wrong to reveal more of the plot, but it contains more dwarves, blood and "Mad-Max"-esque characters than Steve Railsback could shake a stick at. All tongue-in-cheek of course, but so much more the better.

Now fully uncut - See the movie as it was meant to be seen, whatever that means. You may be into Extreme Cinema, your mother may not be. It's cheap, it's bare bones. Just buy it.
