Well, one cannot say that the World of Cinema has really ever been "inundated" with Spanish Sci-Fi : But the Iberian arts have always been dominated by the surreal, the Dadaist - From the fever-dream paintings of Dali and Miro to the eyeball-slicing antics of Luis Bunuel, Spain can do the absurb better than a Horse Wagon full of David Lynch. But what of this film itself? Is it of the same tradition? You'll have to watch it and do your own research unfortunately, as this is a bare-bones release so don't expect the Earth. Don't even expect a small Asteroid...

Alex De La Iglesia is the director, an "Enfant Terrible", the man is also responsible for the equally absurdist "800 Bullets" (also newly available, it plays like a cross between cinema verite and 'El Topo') and a prodigy of the Great Pedro Almodovar, who produces here. The movie describes a future where attractive people rule society with an iron fist; "Mutant Action", led by Ramon Yarritu kidnap the daughter of wealthy industrialist Orujo (at her wedding, natch) for ransom. Pursued to the planet Axturiax for a perceived swap , the deranged Yarritu kills his fellow terrorists one-by-one in order to keep the ill-gotten gains for himself - It would be wrong to reveal more of the plot, but it contains more dwarves, blood and "Mad-Max"-esque characters than Steve Railsback could shake a stick at. All tongue-in-cheek of course, but so much more the better.

Now fully uncut - See the movie as it was meant to be seen, whatever that means. You may be into Extreme Cinema, your mother may not be. It's cheap, it's bare bones. Just buy it.

Produced by the Almodóvar brothers, this is director's Alex de la Iglesia's debut film. Funny, yes, but you have to be a native from Spain to get most of the twisted gags;I'm argentinian and don't need the subtitles. Presented in original though non-anamorphic widescreen, directly tranferred from VHS tape (noticeable from subtle white-spotted tape dropout here and there along the movie)with incredibly high definition and very good sound (especially for a `93 b-movie). First edition DVD suffered from horrible picture and blurred subtitles, not the case anymore ! Some nice extras to the movies are included, like the making off and a beautiful videoclip for the title track of the the soundtrack, Def Con Dos'Acción Mutante (Mutant Action). Why only 3 stars ? I consider myself a connaiseur of the genre and maybe am spoiled by films like the excellent Bad Taste or Abel Ferrara's Driller Killer, amongst many others, and though this film has a superb central theme and oozes excellent ideas and lots of gore, the development and plot somehow drags to the point of barely making you want to complete its viewing......because you paid for it !!

For de la Iglesia's cult of followers only !!!!

Foreign lunacy at its best, perfect for an older relative who's losing marbles big time or a troubled teen who has painted his bedtoom black to voice his inner angst, either way, roll a fat one, open the jaffa cakes and enjoy.

hollywood can not make a decent action film. Action mutante is yet another example of a great action film that those crazy europeans make..
the basic storyline is, a group of misfits (mutants) form a terrorist group and wage war upon the socity that shuns them in favor of the "fit" peaple.
verry sick comedy is plasterd all over the place. i.e. arguing syamise twins etc.

Wacky sci-fi comedy with a hint of social satire, Alex de la Iglesia's first featurette.
