Product Description

Description

Though never a prolific outfit, the Lilac Time has, since the late 1980s, released consistently pleasing, intelligent folk-rock with an emphasis on melody and texture over bombast. Listeners who mourn the Smiths, Lightning Seeds, and Del Amitri can find solace in the continued existence of Stephen Duffy and his jangle-pop sensibility (and some older folks may even get the title reference).
This 2007 release, the first since Duffy's stint as Robbie Williams's co-writer, leans toward the more pastoral, laid-back, and less shiny end of Duffy's repertoire, and his deep, sonorous vocals are foregrounded to an unusual degree, revealing a better voice than fans may remember from previous albums. Every song here--particularly "Dream of a Girl" and "Desert Shore"--sounds like a potential hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars thank you for waiting, 16 Oct 2007
By S. A. J. Duffy (Cornwall) - See all my reviews

apparently it's been five years since the last one - some days it feels like 500 - at times i thought there wouldn't be another one - but then i wrote some songs that i felt equalled and maybe even bettered the ones on keep going - so i recorded them & here they are. this is the 8th lilac time record and i think my 15th in total - i don't know why i mention that - just trying to add some invaluable back ground. although perhaps better known for being the original spoons player in freddy and the dreamers he prefers to be remembered for translating ezra pound into a broad black country accent. one of the high points of this record for me was working with the legendary danny thompson - whose work with the incredible string band pentangle & nick drake - to name but three - i have loved and been inspired by. the artwork is lovely too - at this rate by the time we release the next album there wont be any cd's - so enjoy the artwork while you can. a mini album "happy birthday peace" will be out soon x

5.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Duffy - Folk God!, 16 Oct 2007
By M. A. Watkins (Cardiff, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After reading Mr SAJD's own review, I thought I'd be the first fan to add some thoughts on yet another quality release by Stephen and his Lilac pals.

Since their respective releases, Lilac 6 and Keep Going have been on almost permanent rotation in my house, car, i-pod thingy, etc, etc - driving my neighbours, dogs (Alfie & Dewi say hi to Arthur), family and friends insane. Well after listening to Runout Groove in full twice so far, I can safely say that it will soon join it's predecessors at the very top of the poppermost tree!!!

The opening track, Another Time, is the perfect opener, setting the melancholy mood which always seems to grip me when listening to a Lilac Time album - which is no bad thing. Driving Somewhere lifts the pace and mood a little and was an excellent choice for the first single. It sounded great on the odd occasion BBC Radio 2 & 6 chose to play it and deserves a much wider audience.

The whole album is full of highlights, with A Dream Of A Girl, Pruning The Vine and Happy Go Lucky already early favourites of mine. Stephen and Claire's (Worrall) vocals harmonise perfectly - particularly on the Everly's cover, Until I Kissed You.

The Lilac Time are an unknown pleasure who are cherished by those of us who have been lucky enough to discover them along the way. Unlike most artists, Stephen's writing and melodies seem to improve with age, which is perhaps partly due to him not ever chasing the limelight and playing the fame game. I guess he writes mainly for himself, with almost perfect results.

If you already aware of the Lilac Time, well I'm preaching to the converted and you'll be buying this album regardless. However, if you've got here by chance - go on, take the plunge and buy this album. You won't regret it.

Here's to another great concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall next month and many more years of enjoying Stephen and the Lilac's music. Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars We can be free, live in a lilac time..., 25 Oct 2007
By Andrew Green "andys_zone" (UK) - See all my reviews

On first listen to this album I liked it, on second listen I love it, this deserves to be played to death!

Outstanding are No direction, Aldermaston, another time and the single driving somewhere. The other tracks to me are taking longer to sink in and absorb which is how it should be.

I have followed the lilac time from the start and this is right up there with the best. Check out their myspace if you want to test before you buy and then when you love it come back and sign up!

QEH beckons on 15th November - something to look forward to at least, this album was worth the 5 year wait...
