Bowie's mid-90s revival might not have been appreciated by everyone but he really kicked into touch the commercial doldrums of his mid-80s period. This box comprises the challenging industrial-influenced 'Outside', the frenetic drum & bass driven pop of 'Earthling' (don't believe the critics, no one at the time released a record that sounded like this), the low-key, stripped back material on 'Hours' and the critcally acclaimed 'Heathen' and 'Reality', which saw him re-united with former producer, Tony Visconti (whose credits included 'Diamond Dogs', 'Scary Monsters' and 'Low' from Bowie's most glorious period). But the real bargain is the extras. For a box that rings in at under £30.00 there is some lovely extra material. The 'Basquiat' version of 'A Small Plot of Land' and the 'American Psycho' mix of 'Something in the Air' even knock the originals into a cocked hat, while additional material such as 'Pallas Athena', 'Nothing To Be Desired', 'We Shall Go To Town', 'Shadow Man' and 'When the Boys Go Marching In' indicated that Bowie could still leave great tracks off his albums altogether! Diamond Dave is ripe for a comeback. I strongly recommend this to all but the most hardcore fans who'll have the material anyway. But at £29.99 you can't go wrong!

These are Bowie's 5 most recent albums, each with a separate disc with loads of bonus tracks. At £25, this was a real bargain. After losing the plot in the 80s these records represent a real return to form for one of the few English artists prepared to take risks. All of the albums have a completely different sound and many of the songs rank as some of the best of his career. Tony Visconti is back producing on the two most recent albums. If you already have Low, Man Who Sold The World and Hunky Dory, these should be next on your list.

This box wraps up the late years, the Indian summer that began with the spectacular return to form that was '1.Outside' and ran through Earthling, Hours..., Heathen and finished up with Reality, which is likely to be Bowie's swansong.

I'm assuming that most who read this review will be familiar with the albums, as it's rather a big expense if you're not...

The extra discs (which are, let's face it, what we're buying this set for) contain songs that didn't, for one reason or other, make it onto the albums and remixes. There are a few tracks that seem rather superfluous, but the quality control is pretty good. The packaging is mostly fine if somewhat basic. You get the albums in 'vinyl replica' sleeves, each with their own little booklet.

It's those booklets that are the let down. '1-Outside' suffers the worst, other than on the CDs themselves, the only track listing is for the 13 track vinyl version ('Excerpts from Outside'). All are poorly put together, have little if any info on the bonus disc tracks and are often very hard to read in any case.

A good box set despite the shoddy presentation.
