4.0 out of 5 stars Gently mischevious..., 23 Feb 2009
I bought this album after first hearing Jim Causley on the wonderful "Blood And Honey" by the Devil's Interval.

Jim continues along his gently mischevious, slightly irreverent trajectory, that was so endearing on "Blood And Honey", but here in a very different setting. Cupid The Ploughboy, Wild Rover and Oxford City are the highlights of this set for me. I hadn't expected to like Wild Rover so much, it being such a well-worn piece that has become rather tainted over time, but this treatment of it really works. Oxford City is the only unaccompanied song on the collection, I think I was hoping he'd include a few more unaccompanied pieces, what with his fine voice.

I have a couple of complaints with the album overall. I am finding the backing vocals of James Dumbleton to be a little distracting and to my thinking they don't compliment Jim's singing at all, its like garnishing a chocolate gateau with boiled carrot pieces. James' singing would be fine by itself, but there's something strange about the combination. I'm also bothered by the song Traitors Love - not a great song to begin with - which upsets the balance of the album and doesn't do Jim any favours.

I like the album well enough, but am slightly disappointed by it at the same time. Whilst I wasn't sure what to expect, at the same time I was hoping for an album that was as good all round as his voice is, and would explore further some of the darkness and light of the world portrayed in "Blood And Honey", but it's not here. It seems like here was Jim's chance to make his own statement, and I have a feeling that for whatever reason it didn't happen, the album feels too languid and a little unfocused. Perhaps in part it's down to the choice of songs, which don't coalesce as they did on "Blood And Honey", and partly I was hoping for something edgier, more prickly and earthy. There is no sense here that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, as there was on "Blood And Honey". But all the same, it's a nice album and I am enjoying hearing Jim's wonderful singing.
