This CD doesn't actually contain the track 'Open Bar Reception' - it's just the same as the single in the shops. Which is a disappointment.

Hearing 'Big Casino' is a reminder of what a big, bold and beautiful album 'Chasing This Light' is. (It grows in stature at every listen.) The lyrics to this song are the icing on the cake - an all-out epic with soul and feeling.

The 'B-side' 'Beautiful Is' is intruiging, experimental and poses a very big question for me. If - just if - JEW were allowed to self produce an album in their Arizona studio (as this track has been) without big production values and record company interference...then I think we would see a real progression in what they do. There was some grumbling in record papers about JEW not moving onwards or evolving. I think they could stun us with some awesome songs and new aural templates.

The evidence for this is absolutely written all over 'Beautiful Is' - and on the last EP 'Stay On My Side Tonight'. Not that I'm knocking 'CTL' at all - it fires on all cylinders and then some. But JEW are musicians and songwriters par excellence - and it annoys me that anyone could see them as being 'stalled' in any way. That is simply not true.

I hope for an EP of new outakes. I hope for a Special Edition double disc of 'Chasing' with the demos intact. (Betcha there's loads of guitars on these.) And I hope that this brilliant band will be allowed to make new music within their own parameters next time.
