Description

Toronto-based experimental drone duo Nadja present three extended, unsettlingly intense soundscapes on RADIANCE OF SHADOWS. Enormous washes of doomy metallic guitar pour down on the listener as sparse, death-march drums provide the listener with a slight aural constant on which they can hang for dear life. An occasional hint of a vocal melody or a structured riff will poke through the maelstrom now again, but seemingly only to right the listener in preparation for another tidal wave of divinely heavy fuzz.

Where to Start? Three tracks, all well over 20 minutes long, played by two people, Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff, making one amazing soundscape.
Aidan Baker is first and foremost a guitarist. The sounds he makes, however, are not always immediately recognisable as guitar. Leah plays Bass; heavy low slow bass that blends superbly with the noises Aidan pulls from his guitar. The sounds drift from ambient to intense doom metal and back again with consummate ease. It isn't easy to pigeonhole Nadja. I imagine they would probably be grouped with Isis, Sunn ((O))), Jesu, Boris, certainly in terms of the quality of their output, although this doesn't really help put across their sound. If you want fast and furious, or perky pop, or late night easy listening, then this album probably isn't for you. If you want slow, powerful, intense music that you feel as much as hear, then I heartily recommend this album.

OK, so the classification in the title of this review is ever-so-slightly toungue-in-cheek but don't let that put you off if you're on the lookout for something heavier than mere heavy, something that is very much like this monolithic monster, guaranteed to have all manner of life in the immediate vicinity scurrying for cover. Words are simply not enough to do this band/album justice, but if you really want to crank that volume up to (and even beyond) 11 then this is the band for you. I am a recent convert and will definitely be shopping for more Nadja when I get back from my hols! As the other reviewer has mentioned, it's incredible to believe that only two people can conjure up something as LOUD as this!!
