5.0 out of 5 stars very very good., 28 Nov 2007
An outstanding record. Seductive, cohesive, atmospheric and above all interesting. Tip-top slightly trippy dubbyness put together with knowing and delicate mix of styles. It really works.

Makes me wonder why more dance records simply aren't this good. Come to think of it, most are no where near as good as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genre bouncing-head nodding cracker, 12 Nov 2007

(REAL NAME)
For those who already know and love the Oneiric album, this latest offering is definitely essential. Its fresh and alive in every way. The only criticism that I can offer to help you make your decision or not is that its not pure dance-floor or club orientated. Its focus is the Headz: SMoke something and put on the headphones to fully appreciate. It works at home during the day and night, it works as a soundtrack to a city, it works in nature. What I love about this album is that it takes me back to the early 90's in terms of tone and mood setting, when IDM first woke us up to what nightlife could be if you just let it. Complex sound structures that are consistent in their overall effect on the whole piece: the album. Thats a rare thing these days especially when most producers are falling over themselves to create the next stomper or even a new genre: focusing on individual tracks instead of whole albums. To me, most of the dub step crowd pleaser's are designed around highlighting the individual elements, making the overall experience, purer perhaps but also simple. Same with Drum & Bass, garage, grime etc. Heavy bass:no real melody, crazy beat:no real progression, catchy vocal:where is the synth.
There are perhaps no single stompers here, instead the whole album is the stomper. That to me is a reason to buy this instead of other artists who fans think are essential because of a couple of good tracks. Glyphic keeps the jamaican flavor to a exciting minimum and adds crazy jazz drums, light garage, ethnic flutes and Aphex twin piano (but doesn't over do it, thanx fux). This is an intelligent album which will still be significant when dubstep is no longer because it crosses over into IDM and chillout. It gets 5 stars because its better than Oneiric, which was the best dubstep album of last year.

4.0 out of 5 stars beyond genres, 14 Mar 2008
By justin case (toulouse) - See all my reviews
Boxcutter takes off beyond dubstep, back to the old days of IDM and into the future. With its deep sound and rich textures, this record suceeds in being the opposite to flat or just "ambient" music. In fact, and despite the different tempos proposed all throughout, the record remains cohesive and it easily grabs your full attention. Brilliant stuff.
