Chronos II maintains the stylish design and aluminium facia that made the original so popular but also has an improved display, automatic light sensor and includes FM with RDS.

If you haven’t experienced DAB digital radio yet, you’re in for a treat. Select stations by name, see news and track titles on the scrolling text display, tune at the touch of a button, and listen in crisp, clear, digital-quality sound. And there’s more listening choice on DAB too – in many areas up to twice as many stations as FM.

Of course, Chronos II still has plenty of bedside features, such as a large clock display, four independent alarms (each of which can be set for weekdays only, weekends only or as a one-off), a snooze timer and a sleep timer.

Other features include PURE’s Intellitext®, for browsing stored scrolling text, textSCAN™ to pause and control scrolling text and a USB port to add new features as they become available.

Chronos II is one of PURE’s EcoPlus products and is designed and manufactured to minimize environmental impact, with: - Reduced power consumption in operation and standby

- Use of materials from recycled and sustainable sources

- The smallest possible packaging

- Components selected to minimize environmental impact

Chronos II is one of ten PURE radios recommended by the Energy Saving Trust (EST). Products endorsed by the EST have to satisfy an Independent Endorsement Panel of experts and draw less than 1W of current in standby and 3.5W in operation. The EST takes into account their energy efficiency, sustainability (to gauge their overall environmental impact), and how economical they are to run.

    Brilliant. I was put off buying the old Chronos by some of the reviews, but the Chronos II seems to have addressed ALL of the issues previous owners have had. Well done Pure for listening.
    Good points:
    neat, unobtrusive, good sound, very easy to use, sleep function fades out, alarm can be set for "weekday" or "everyday" or "once" etc, alarm has independent volume and station to the last one you were tuned to (or the same if that's what you want! Very clear display without being bright (auto or manual dim) - I was brought up in the middle of Mid Wales (more sheep than people) where the nearest street light was over 3 miles away so I know what dark is, and believe me NO ONE could complain about this display (which, incidentally, you can set to display the time or any other info when the radio is on or in sleep mode simply by pressing the "info" button).
    Bad points:
    non at all
    Conclusion: if you want a quality clock radio buy this one. Besides being very good it is the only DAB+ upgradeable one that I am aware of (so you wont be throwing it in the bin in a few years time when DAB is replaced by DAB+)

    I received the Chronos II for Christmas as a replacement for my old AM/FM radio alarm-clock, and have been extremely impressed with the product.

    THE PROS:

    - The triangular "Toblerone" shape means the clock radio occupies the minimum amount of space on a bedside table. The buttons are clear and easy to find, and build quality is also very good.
    - The DAB reception is crystal clear and, unlike my old FM radio, it does not "drift" between radio stations over time.
    - For a small clock radio, the sound quality is good (however it is not a replacement for a HiFi system).
    - The clock always shows the correct time, as it automatically syncs with the time broadcast via DAB.
    - You can set four different alarms with individual settings, including weekdays-only, weekends-only, etc. No more waking up at 6am on a Saturday!!
    - It has an adjustable Snooze timer (why are snooze timers normally 9 minutes?)
    - There is an automatic dimmer, plus High and Low manual settings for the display
    - You can customise radio alarm volume settings
    - There is a neat headphone socket tucked in the top rear corner of the unit, which avoids the need to fumble with cables around the back of the clock.

    THE CONS:

    - If I was being ultra-picky, the display is a little bit on the small side, meaning that it is a bit difficult to read the time from a distance (e.g. >4m).

    CONCLUSION:

    I think this is a great product, and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a DAB clock radio.

    Sadly I'm going to send this product back for three reasons.

    1) Reception very poor - despite being in what the BBC website says is a good DAB reception area (walton-on-thames). It is also highly variable - sometimes it's fine when i'm stood in the room - but suddenly gets weak when I lie on the bed.

    2) Display far too bright - even on the dim setting - I have to place a book in front of it at night - shouldn't really have to do this with a £50+ product.

    3) - and this is the clincher - there's no way to easily cancel the alarm if you wake up before it goes off. I often have 5am starts for work - if I wake up before the alarm it's much better for my partner if I can quickly cancel it before it wakes her up as well - instead I have to go through a clunky menu system to do this - not easy at 4:55am.

    It's a shame because it looks nice on my bedside table - and I really want DAB so I can listen to the cricket on 5 live sports extra. But for a second generation machine basic faults like points 2 and 3 are really unacceptable.
