After at first being quite taken by Diabolus in Musica's recording of Dufay's Missa Se la face ay pale (I now think it is too slow and cold), I found this disk of Dufay songs really disappointing. It is largely sung as if the music is sacred and deeply serious, with slow tempi, little expressiveness, and no fun. It is hard to believe that people in the late middle ages wanted their music to sound boring, but that seems to be the approach here. It is interesting that the liner notes state that secular and sacred music at this time were considered so different, that musicians usually did not perform both. Diabolus could have learned from that. A better recent performance of Dufay songs is Dufay - Tempio dell'Onore e delle Vertù (Cantica Symphonia), but the best, because really worldly, joyful and expressive is the old Studio der Frühen Musik recording (now hard to find...).
