5.0 out of 5 stars soul music of an accidental migrant, 14 Mar 2008
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
"It is not my purpose, not my desire, to attempt a reconstruction of Jewish music. It is the Jewish soul that interests me, the complex, agitated soul that I feel vibrating through the Bible." So wrote Ernest Bloch, and surely he succeeded in giving voice to that soul in these three works.

In 1916 at the age of 36 Bloch found himself adrift, a migrant in America. It was not the forced migration of the Jewish exiles of the Old Testament. It was not the hopeful migration of generations of Jews who crossed to America in search of a better life. He had come to the United States as a conductor of the Maud Allen Troupe. He intended to return to Europe, but the tour was a disaster. He found himself with no money to get home. He didn't let the situation put him off his stride. Three years later he won the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge composition prize. A year after that the became Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music. And on he forged.

His Violin Concerto is a large work almost 40 minutes in length. It has a brilliant, sparse but rich orchestral accompaniment that propels the complex, yearning, agitated soul of the violin forward at a confident marching pace. The music is like the man himself. It is the voice of an accidental migrant on foreign soil, unhomed, but sure of his heritage, and determined to grab every opportunity life throws at him. I find it to be a deeply rewarding piece, as expressive as any high romantic concerto, but clearly of the 20th century.

The shorter works that follow: Baal Shem (Three Pictures of the Chassidic Life) and Suite Hebraique for Violin Solo and Orchestra are two more tonics for the ear.

The reason for much of my listening pleasure is the wonderful playing of Zina Schiff, an incredibly talented Israeli violinist. She brings superb technique and wonderful articulation of feeling together to deliver show stopping performances. She lifts this from being a disc that I could happily listen to from time to time to one that I find myself turning to again and again to hear the vigorous spirit in her playing. It is playing that extends out from the Classical tradition into - not so much folk music - but into a healthy peasant earthiness. Bloch is a Jewish composer who, just seven years after the Holocaust, could end the last work on this disc with a third movement `Affirmation'. The music and this violinist belong together. They make me glad to be alive.
