Product Description

Description

The follow-up to the enormously successful SOME HEARTS, former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's second album moves away from the Shania Twain-like pop influences of her debut into a purer form of country music that focuses on her remarkable voice. Comparisons to Trisha Yearwood, Reba McEntire, and Faith Hill are valid, especially on songs like the twangy first single "So Small". That song is one of four co-written by Underwood; the remaining three are among the strongest on the album, alongside a heartfelt cover of Randy Travis's "I Told You So" and the wry "The More Boys I Meet". CARNIVAL RIDE is a much more self-assured and personal album thanSOME HEARTS, and it's a straightforward slice of contemporary Nashville country at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carrie conquers contemporary country, 9 Nov 2007
By Amanda Richards "Hotpurplekoolaid" (ECD, Guyana) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The second album from Carrie Underwood packs slightly less punch than her debut, but is still more than enough to further cement her place in the contemporary country hierarchy. Solidly country, this album showcases Underwood as a singer/songwriter with writing credits on four of the tracks - first single "So Small"; the excellent "All American Girl"; "Crazy Dreams" and the comedy track "Last Name". (If you liked Alan Jackson's "I Don't Even Know Your Name", you'll see lots of similarities to the aforementioned "Last Name".)

All the tracks are worth a listen, but some are immediately worth an instant replay. My recommendations are:

Flat on the Floor - a hard-rocking track with attitude
All-American Girl - instant single material with heartwarming lyrics
So Small - soaring first single about not sweating the small stuff
Just a Dream - a tear jerker with a wonderful chorus
Crazy Dreams - catchy beat just slightly reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Education"
I Told You So - slow ballad written by Randy Travis
Wheel of the World - an easy listening track with inspired backing music

If the four tracks on which she has songwriting credits are any indication, Carrie Underwood has nowhere to go but up - should be a wild ride. (4.5 stars)

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm..., 3 Nov 2007
By Kay (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews

I love Carrie Underwood, and I love country-pop music [a la Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania et al] but I am unconvinced about this album.

It is different to "Some Hearts" which despite being her off the back of AI album was a good, solid debut album especially as the winners or reality shows churn out their first album in record time, and is usually full of weak, slushy ballads and rejected uptempo songs with the odd good track thrown in.

"All-American Girl" I expect is single material, and my favourite song of the album. It's a little corny, but it's cute in the I-don't-have-to-think- about-it way. It's catchy and most definitely radio friendly. Carrie has a great voice, and she knows how to use it - she doesn't feel the need to make up three minutes of a songs with ooh's and ahh's [Yes, Miss Aguilera, I am talking about you!].

"So Small" is the first single off CR, and is a great radio friendly power ballad. It wasn't a song I was instantly a fan of, but it's one that has grown on me. It's not groundbreaking lyrically - don't worry about the trivial thing but it's hopefully optimistic, and being a natural born cynic these kind of tracks tend to make me smile.

"The More Boys I Meet" is more of a punchline than a song "The more boys I meet the more I love my dog" but it's fun, and it's not to be taken too seriously [which some music critics seem to have done].

Being the cynic I am "Just A Dream" I assume is bound to be a single and bound to be a hit [A bit like "Jesus Take The Wheel" appealled to the Bible Belt of the good ol' US of A]. It's about a soldier who's died in service. So, with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the likely war in Iran, it's going to pull of the heart strings of the American general public.

I just can't take "Last Name" seriously, because Carrie is not a bad girl, she just isn't. I had the same difficulty with "Before He Cheats" despite liking the song, it just doesn't have the oomph that it would had should it have been sung by another singer. Carrie is sweet Miss America. She is not getting drunk, and finding herself engaged to someone who's last name she does not know.

For me, the majority of the tracks are fairly nondescript but maybe, just maybe, as with Kelly Clarkson's "My December", it'll be a grower.
