Product Description

Thriller starring Kevin Bacon. Nick Hume (Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. His family falls victim to a vicious attack perpetrated by a gang as part of their initiation ritual and his son is brutally murdered. When Hume is failed by the judicial system he vows to track every person involved in the crime, and embarks on a vigilante mission which not only sets off a police investigation, but starts a cycle of violence that draws his whole family into the politics of the gang who perpetrated the crime. Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.

After watching this last night on DVD, I came online to read the reviews it got and was really shocked at the bad press it's recieved. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it. It was touching, terrifying and exciting in equal doses.

I generally like revenge flicks but one of the main problems they usually have is that the act of vengeance takes place halfway through and the rest of the film starts losing it's way... not here. In this film, it's a war from start to finish between Kevin Bacon's smart-suited family man and a street gang. Essentially a remake of Death Wish and an adaptation of that novel's sequel, Death Sentence carries the theme off very well and had me gripped throughout.

The opening scenes of tragedy were very moving, but the 'action' sequences that ensue are also very well handled. If you like your one-take sequences, then there's a beautiful five minute steadicam shot as Bacon is chased through a multi-storey car park. Also, the shootouts that take place are very visceral and engaging, despite the bad guys' abysmal aiming!

On another note, I cannot understand the criticisms that claim the film glorifies revenge. Yes, at first, we want nothing more than to see these lowlives get their comeuppance but as the film spirals into chaos, it's a clear message that revenge comes with a massive price to pay. In my opinion, this is one of the classier and most entertaining revenge flicks out there.

This is a far superior film to the original Charles Bronson Death Wish film with both more plot and character which is just a well since there's been plenty of time to learn how to get it right. Kevin Bacon pulls it off as the typical man in the street who discovers the meaner side of life and the consequences of personal vigilantiism.

The Hume family were well introduced and gave the viewer a good insight to the family happily pottering along without the bad things of life getting in the way until a lack of fuel lands Hume Senior and his eldest son at a petrol station in the seedier side of town. Hume's decision in court (watch and find out why) leads to his own justice which backfires very badly indeed. He manages to survive this and evade teh police to go on to serve up full blown bloody revenge on the gang. The film ends in such a way that there is a possiblity of a sequel to come.

A very enjoyable film which passed the time well.

Every once in a while you come across a film you've never heard of, take a punt and - like Kevin Bacon's family - are blown away.

Bacon plays the film's anti hero, Nick Hume, who is hell bent on revenge after his son is brutally murdered in front of him in a gang initiation. Things quickly spiral out of control and before long both Bacon and the local gang find themselves in a world of hurt.

For me, I enjoyed Death Sentence more than a lot of other revenge type flicks for two reasons. One, it was pretty dark and the story certainly didn't shy away or pull any punches. And two, the way it was shot was superb.

The director did a really good job here. The violence was well choreographed and creative and best of all, there were some incredible set pieces which were handled brilliantly; one chase scene standing out in particular.

In fact, the car park chase scene of which I speak (and the immediate assault and pursuit leading up to it) really made me stop, take stock and think... "Just imagine", I thought. "What would you do? How would I react if that were me?"

The scene felt so visceral and real, you really felt like you were right there on. Or at least that you could imagine yourself in Bacon's shoes. It really put you in the heart of the action and watching the 'making of' documentary afterwards, it turns out this was exactly the affect the director wanted. Well, let me tell you, he succeeded.

The resulting scene was a triumph of creativity and one of the most memorable cinematic experiences I've had in a long time, and the rest of the film didn't disappoint. I was worried that the film might have peaked at that scene, but after that point, things really ramp up as both Bacon and the gang take matters into their own hands.

***********************************************NOTE: This review contains spoilers ******************************************

As the review title suggests, Death Sentence is an equal balance of both a ridiculously unconventional and obscure plot bolstered by nonetheless gritty, hard boiled vigilantism. Which is why, consequently, it receives three stars from me; its shamefully paper-thin in substance is only just, but not sufficiently, counteracted by its violence. Here's why.

The premise is one which is an unimaginative as it comes: a family man and CEO of an insurance firm, Nick Hume (played by Kevin Bacon), with a seemingly perfect life, (don't they all in these Hollywood flicks?) witnesses his son brutally attacked by a vicious mob. Unsatisfied with the law's punishment, Nick decides to take matters into his own hands. Let's just stop here for a moment. Because therein lies the biggest, most substantially pathetic error that drives Death Sentence into an absolute car crash. And it begins with a certain 'car sequence,' of all things. I didn't know what I was expecting with this film, considering it divided the critics and the everyday viewers, with negative and positive review respectively. However, after around 1 hour and 10 minutes in, I began to have a clear indication where this film was heading.

Nick Hume is not a killer. It's not in his blood to murder. Even when pushed to the brink, his take on revenge is flawed, panicky and rushed. And this does give a sense of realism about it, which I admit is done well, mostly to Bacon's credit. You generally feel for his character. Even after revenge against the individual, he doesn't feel any better. He's grief-stricken, cold and somewhat scared. Retreated into a shell.
