DVD Description
From director Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential, Wonder Boys, 8 Mile) comes a story of human relationships set in the high-stakes world of Las Vegas. In Lucky You, Billie Offer (Drew Barrymore) is a young singer from Bakersfield with more heart than talent. Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a poker player whose emotions at the table often undermine his exceptional skill, especially when he is heads up with his father, poker legend LC Cheever (Robert Duvall). The one aptitude Billie and Huck seem to share is a knack for reading people—the difference is what they do with that gift. While Huck’s instincts enable him to take advantage of his opponents at the poker table and expertly avoid both emotional connections and long-term commitments in his personal life, Billie uses her intuition to see the emotional truth of those around her and sympathise with their pain. When these two meet, the real game begins. If Huck is going to win Billie’s heart, he must learn to play cards the way he has been living life, and live his life the way he has been playing cards.

Synopsis
Director Curtis Hanson (LA CONFIDENTIAL, WONDER BOYS) raises the stakes and takes on Las Vegas in LUCKY YOU. Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) plays poker for a living, using every opportunity that arises in daily life to hone his skills and test the odds. He is fuelled by both a compulsion to win and the desire to do better than his father, L.C. Cheever (Robert Duvall), who is a championship poker player. Huck’s skills come naturally, but he lacks patience. When he meets Billie Offer (Drew Barrymore), an earnest, honest girl from Bakersfield pursuing her dream of being a singer, he sees the possibility of a real relationship for the first time. But Huck’s habits are hard to break, and he’ll have to make some changes if he wants to make this relationship work.
Barrymore is sweet as Billie, but it is the relationship between Huck and his father that moves the story along. Huck harbors ill feelings towards L.C. from his childhood--feelings that are complicated by his burning desire to beat his father at poker. Bana effectively shows the animosity Huck feels towards his father with subtle changes to his facial expression and body language, and Duvall actually makes the hard-nosed L.C. likeable. Ultimately, the real star of this movie is poker. Throughout the film, it’s the strategies and bets, the flops and the rivers, that draw the viewer in. Professional poker players served as consultants and extras in the film, lending authenticity to the World Series of Poker where father and son face off. Debra Messing plays Billie’s sister, Horatio Sanz is Ready Eddie, who can turn any situation into a bet, and Robert Downey Jr. appears all too briefly as Huck’s friend.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Must be tough playing in the shadow of your father", 6 Oct 2007
By Sebastian Fernandez (Tampa, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This is a great time to come out with a movie about poker, since the sport has taken off at supersonic speed with amateurs winning the main event of the World Series in the last few years and people following the action on ESPN. The main problem I see with this movie though is that in an effort to be original it runs into unreal situations like a misdeal followed by a huge bad beat, or a close call to end a contrived bet.

The plot is fairly typical, a poker pro, Huck Cleever, trying to make it to the World Series of poker and win the main event. In the process, he meets a girl that shakes his world and makes him rethink his priorities. The added complication is that he is the son of a two-time winner of the event, and the son-father relationship has been in tatters for a long time. During his quest, Huck experiences huge swings in his luck, and this provides an enlightening view of what the life of a professional gambler can be like.

The acting is not particularly inspired, with the exception of Robert Duvall, who plays L.C. Cheever, the father of the protagonist. Duvall infuses his character with the external toughness and inner conflicts that the role requires and is therefore extremely successful in the process. There is a wide array of poker pros taking part in this movie, but most of them have silent roles, the exceptions are Sammy Farha and Jason Lester, who have a couple of lines each. The list of celebrities includes among others Phil Helmut, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson. I did not really understand why a couple of pros play characters with different names, like Jennifer Harman, who plays Shannon Kincaid, or John Hennigan as Ralph Kaczynski.

Overall, I think that the idea of the movie was good, but the execution was deficient and the overall quality suffered as a result. For a long time to come, poker movies are going to be evaluated in terms of how they compare to "Rounders", and in that sense, this one comes up short. Poker players will probably get some enjoyment from this production, but they should not expect much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great but a good watch!, 5 Jan 2008

A film about a professional gambler trying to win the World Series of poker.
In answer to Mr. R. P. Quinlan's review the film is ABOUT POKER!!! and about a professional POKER PLAYER trying to win! not about Drew Barrymore, all she is there to do is be a reactant that makes Huck Cheever see the consequences of his life and the need to make changes! And she plays that role very well. If you want a drew barrymore film, go get one of the many chick flicks she has done!

1.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU'RE NOT INTO POKER, Drew Barrymore Fans --- BEWARE!, 22 Nov 2007
By Mr. R. P. Quinlan - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this DVD, as I usually do, without seeing the movie beforehand; and am EXTREEMELY SORRY that I did.

The plot centres arround a young woman (Drew Barrymore) trying to break the obsession with Poker held by her new Boy Friend.

If you like Drew Barrymore, then you, like me, are in for the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT of your viewing life. This film is 95 percent POKER, with only 5 percent Drew Barrymore.

I bought the movie expecting to see a typical Drew Barrymore Rom-Com. All I got was the story of the male lead's OBSESSION with POKER (a Card game about which I know precisely NOTHING), and the odd shot of M/s Barrymore when the film makers felt she could be allowed to make an appearance.

If M/s Barrymore was in the film for more than arround 10 minutes, I will be most surprised: yet she was concidered the Leading Lady. When she was allowed to appear in the movie, M/s Barrymore was NOT ALLOWED TO ACT IN THE MANNER WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT OF HER, and I got the impression that ALL I was being allowed to watch was THE MALE LEAD PLAYING POKER.

IF YOU'RE NOT INTO POKER, DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS MOVIE. I have NEVER seen SUCH RUBBISH in my life!

This movie left me wondering whoes OBSESSION WITH POKER was the GREATEST: the Lead Male Character's, or the FILM MAKER'S!

I have rated this movie very low, MARKING UP MY RATING RATHER THAN GIVE DREW BARRYMORE THE TRUE RATING I FELT THE MOVIE TO BE WORTH:- i.e. MINUS 100/10. I actually gave a VERY GENEROUSE 1/10; but cannot show this in terms of the 5-star rating offerred. My 1 star SHOULD BE HALVED!

Take my tip: LEAVE THIS MOVIE WELL ALONE!
