Product Description

Product Description

This BBC comedy sitcom Gavin and Stacey features a romantic, off-beat, boy-meets-girl story.

Gavin is an ordinary boy from England, Stacey is an ordinary girl from Wales. They speak every day on the phone at work, and yet they've never met... until now. But when Gavin and Stacey finally meet and their ordinary worlds come together, we see, through their families, their friends and their differences, that there's no such thing as 'ordinary' after all.

Written by and starring Ruth Jones (Nighty Night, Little Britain) and James Corden (The History Boys), the series also features Mathew Horne (Catherine Tate, Roman's Empire), Joanna Page (Gideon's Daughter, Love Actually), Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Melanie Walters.

This DVD features all the episodes in Series 1 originally aired on BBC 3.

A true modern day romance.Top marks to the 4 lead charactors, especially Ruth Jones as Ness'.[It took me ages to work out where I had seen Ruth Jones before then I realised she was Linda in Nighty Night]
Alison Steadman is the true gem in this show though, '3 steaks Pam' how that cracked me up.
Then here pushing poor put upon husband Mick to Tescos to get Linda McCartney bits in case anybody was a vegge. That is something my own mother has done in the past so I near had a heart attck through laughing that much.
I have a habit of always looking at the supporting cast rather than the main stars so Uncle Bryn, again was another marvel in this.
When he listed off all of Staceys ex-fiancees,and pronounced the name Ahmed in a true welsh fashion, again, comedy gold.'He even sends me a Christmas card and they[muslims]don't even celebrate it!'
As soon as Season 2 comes out I will be buying it.

Somehow I had managed to totally miss out on G&S when it was on TV. I had heard that it was good but never actually caught a single episode.

So I got this DVD - and I was instantly hooked and ended up watching all 6 episodes back to back in a single sitting. It is stunning - well written, great characters, great actors (Rob Brydon is a genius) and life-affirming charming.

I haven't been so bowled over by a British comedy so since Phoenix Nights or Spaced.

I'm now off to get the DVD of the second series.

The whole basis of Gavin and Stacey is very simple but the script, characters and comic timing make it a classic. Like all good comedies every character has a part to play and each is so realistic that you feel that you know them from somewhere. Above all Rob Brydon is pure comic genius.

This is possibly the best new comedy series in years. One of very few TV shows to have made me literally double up with laughter.

The superb writing and acting means we have many great characters and sub-plots to enjoy and arguably we have one of the greatest comedy creations of all time, namely 'Nessa' as portrayed by the wonderful Ruth Jones (who also plays the lovely 'Mags' in Saxondale and co-writes this show with James Corden).

Nessa is a 'hard' Barry girl who has seen it all before and has the t-shirt. She gets many 'killer' lines, all delivered in that deadpan Barry accent. The story about being wined and dined by Dodi Al Fayed is nothing short of hysterical. I laughed so much I thought I'd done some damage. Yet, behind the hard drinking, hard bonking tough exterior we are allowed glimpses of the vulnerable girl within, particularly in the last episode of the series which leaves us wanting more.

Ms Jones is beginning to appear more and more on our sets and is one of the best actresses we have! Having previously appeared in Fat Friends, Little Britain, Nighty Night and Saxondale, 'Nessa' has to be her best character to date.

She plays opposite James Corden as Smithy, the wonderful 'best mate' to Gavin. His 'relationship' with Nessa provides an ongoing source of laughter throughout the series and their playing of the hotel room scene (and it's aftermath) is masterly.

Among the other characters, Rob Brydon gives a 'stand out' performance as Stacey's uncle. His reading of the message from her deceased father en route to her wedding moved me from laughter to tears and back again. "Do you want me to read it in his voice? With the lisp and everything"? Priceless.

You have to had it to the dear old Beeb, that company is responsible for some of our all-time classic and best-loved comedy series. They still deliver the odd gem, and in 2007, the public were first invited the follow the adventures of 'Gavin & Stacey' on the BBC 3 channel, in what is an instantly likeable, and very entertaining little sitcom.

Written by the talented James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also appear in the series, the wonderful Matthew Horne stars as only child, mummy's boy Gavin, who has been having an online relationship with bubbly and excitable Stacey, played by Joanna Page for six months. The pair have talked on the phone to each other since then everyday, but have never actually met - until now.

What soon becomes apparent is that these two lovebirds are actually the most normal people in the show, in comparison that is to their wacky families and acentric friends. Despite the oddball natures of them all, they are so realistically written for and well portrayed, that you can't help but compare them to people that you have known in real life. The cast of top talent also includes Rob Brydon (or Ben Miller who I initially thought he was), Larry Lamb, and Ruth Jones who is particularly good as Stacey's best mate Nessa, tough on the outside, but vulnerable on the inside.

As a more than keen indie-rock music lover, I have to un-shamefully biasedly say what a great soundtrack the show has, with music from the likes of Razorlight, Paolo Nutini, The Kooks, The Libertines, Supergrass, and the Arctic Monkeys.

'Gavin and Stacey;' is a real modern day romance, that suggests from the very beginning that the flowering relationship between the two characters is going to be far from plain sailing.
