I purchased all three of these albums on vinyl when they were originally released and they have always been 3 of my favourite albums. To be able to buy all three (OK I know it's on CD and not vinyl) for the price quoted above is an absolute steal - please believe me.

This is a no-brainer act now before they change their mind!

So for a very modest sum, I get the chance to revisit three albums that I passed over in my youth. Thanks to bargain-bulk packaging I can reconsider them. Was it worth it? Well, ...yes and no. I'm pleased to have all three but I could have lived without them.
"Caravanserai" is perfect jazz-latin fusion. Put this on when you collapse into an armchair with a stiff drink after a hard day at work. Mellow, atmospheric and mildly interesting. And so it goes... In "Love, Devotion & Surrender" we get a lovely John Coltrane tribute album. Tasteful but a little more tangy than the meandering desert caravan. Bizarrely, one thing you won't get is the track "Love, Devotion and Surrender" which actually makes an appearance on the second Santana/McLoughlin collaboration, "Welcome". Here you can once again enjoy two consummate musicians bouncing ideas and sounds around in a thoroughly engaging display of virtuoso guitar doodling. The band are clearly having a good time and so do we.
All three together make up a nicely varied trio from Santana's heyday but, following on the heels of three of the greatest albums ever made, you can't help feeling a bit let down. It's all just a tiny bit self-conscious and (what my dear mother would call) "arty-farty". Even so, they are interesting enough to avoid the deadly "easy listening" accusation and worth investigating, but only if you've already got the ground-breaking trio of albums that propelled Santana into pop mythology. (From which high point, I'm afraid, it's been gently downhill all the way).
