This mammoth chronicle of the legendary Bob Dylan's five-decade-spanning career contains his best-known works (among them 'The Times They Are A-Changing' and the oft-covered 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door') as well as some obscure tracks from his more experimental periods. Though he was originally notable for his politically motivated anthems, a focus on musical progression has prevailed in later recordings. With Dylan's never-ending touring schedule and frequently evolving creative output still flourishing, this retrospective is as timely as it is detailed. The two disc version contains an exclusive remix of 'Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)' by notable British electronic re-interpreter Mark Ronson.

Jeffrey "Paul Jeffrey" (Solihull, England) - See all my reviews    Ignore the quibbles about missing classics or the relative lack of anything on here written and performed after 1976. As the sleeve notes clearly state treat this as a sampler and use it as an excuse to delve back into the originals. Th tracklisting may be familiar but played back to back you are left in doubt that here are some of the powerful songs of the twentieth century. The lyrics stand out in particular from Blowin in the Wind to Just Like a Woman and Hurricane - the story of boxer Reuben Carter wrongly accused of murder. Mr Tambourine Man and All Along the Watchtower were classics for the Byrds and Hendrix but the stripped down originals also stand the test of time. The bonus disc has two versions of the same track Most Likely You Go Your own Way, one a remix from Mark Ronson - not the best thing on here.  Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you?
