DVD Description
With an all-star ensemble cast of the UK's most loved actors including David Jason, Ian Richardson, Peter Guinness, Marc Warren and Tony Robinson, Hogfather brings Pratchett's infamous 'Discworld' to life.

Discworld is a world very similar to our own - if you overlook the fact that it is flat, and balanced on four elephants, which in turn are standing on the back of a giant turtle. The inhabitants of Discworld have their own version of Christmas, Hogswatch, and their own version of Santa, the Hogfather - who is pulled across the sky in a hog-drawn sleigh.

This year, however, something is amiss, when on the night before Hogswatch, Death (voiced by Richardson, Bleak House), who is responsible for escorting all beings to the afterlife, notices that the Hogfather's life-timer is lying broken on the floor of his castle. Could it be that Hogswatch will not happen this year?

With much of the fabric of reality dependent on the human power of belief, Death swaps his black shroud for a false beard and red coat to make sure that the children of Discworld remain blissfully unaware of the Hogfather's absence. With the help of his faithful servant Albert (Jason, A Touch of Frost, Only Fools and Horses) Death dutifully travels from house to house delivering gifts, leaving his granddaughter Susan (Michelle Dockery) to find the real Hogfather before belief in him, and subsequently Discworld is destroyed.

Synopsis
In this live-action adaptation of the Terry Pratchett book of the same name, the inhabitants of Discworld celebrate a form of Christmas called Hogswatch, where the Hogfather travels in a hog-drawn sleigh, delivering presents to children. In this world, the fabric of reality is predominantly dependent on the power of belief. So, when the Hogfather mysteriously disappears, Death dons a red coat and false beard and sets about delivering all the presents before the children of Discworld notice that anything is amiss. Of course, he cannot do it all alone, and enlists the help of his trusty servant Albert (David Jason, ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES). Meanwhile, Death’s granddaughter Susan (Michelle Dockery, CONSENT) searches for the Hogfather before belief in him disappears, leading to the destruction of Discworld. This adaptation of THE HOGFATHER is the first time a live-action version of a book by the hugely successful author Terry Pratchett has been made and it manages to be an entertaining Christmas family tale. With a sizeable budget and a charismatic performance by David Jason, THE HOGFATHER brings Discworld fully to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent adaptation of the Discworld novel, 13 Jan 2008
By Marshall Lord (Whitehaven, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
An excellent film to watch with the family if you like Terry Pratchet's novels of Discworld, particularly at Christmas.

The story is divided into two episodes, each with an introduction and a set of credits. Contrary to the inaccurate review above, both episodes ARE included on the disc.

The story is set in Terry Pratchet's Discworld at the start of the festival of "Hogswatch" which is extremely similar to our Christmas. Children are hanging up their stockings and hoping that "The Hogfather" (e,g, Santa Claus/Father Christmas) will bring them plenty of presents.

At the start of the film, four spectres who call themselves the auditors of reality pay a visit to the head of the Guild of Assassins with a most unusual assignment - they want to take out a contract on Father Christmas/The Hogfather.

It turns out that a very sinister assassin called Mr Teatime,
(pronounced Tay - Ah - Tee - May and he hates being addressed by the name of the meal) has actually done some thinking about how you might go about killing immortal beings like the Tooth Fairy, Death, or Father Christmas, and he is willing to put these ideas into practice ...

Mr Teatime's plans appear to be working when both Death, and Death's grand-daughter Susan, discover that something very strange is going on. Before long Death finds himself impersonating Santa (sorry, the Hogfather).

It's not often an actor who is merely providing a voice manages to steal the show, but the late Ian Richardson as the voice of Death, manages to do so here. Richardson even gets to reprise the infamous line of his almost equally sinister character Francis Urquhart from House of Cards - "You might think that, I couldn't possibly comment."

Richardson and David Jason provide an excellent double act with Jason playing Death's butler.

A very amusing film with some great acting and brilliant special effects and lots of highly entertaining details such as a cameo appearance for the Death of Rats. (Ian Richardson's character is referred to throughout simply as "Death" but in line with Pratchett's books he is actually the "Death of Humans.")

Mostly light-hearted but also includes some sombre and quite powerful scenes when Death eventually realises and explains to his grand-daughter why the Auditors want the Hogfather killed and why they have to try to stop this happening.

I can strongly recommend this DVD, especialy to Pratchett fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hogswatch heaven, 2 Jan 2008

Really enjoyed this film. An enjoyable, funny twist on Christmas, without being too cheesy, gaudy or over the top, like some Hollywood Christmas films can be. Not sure I agree with David Jason taking centre stage in the credits and the box cover though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hog Father DVD by Terry Pratchett, 9 April 2009
Excellent quality DVD, excellent scene settings with lots of famous voices and faces. Generally surreal and funny, however, the plot is drawn out a little too long in places and tends to becomes a little boring from time to time. Well worth watching in two sittings.
