JD Souther has long been known to afficionados of West Coast music as the writer of a string of hits for others, and as a superb performer in his own right. This compilation, together with a new EP and a forthcoming new album (his first since 1984), should give his music the higher profile that it so richly deserves.

Hits written or co-written by Souther include several Eagles tracks ('New Kid in Town', 'Best of My Love', 'Heartache Tonight', 'Victim of Love') and others recorded by artists as diverse as Linda Ronstadt, George Strait, Glenn Campbell and James Taylor. The enduring appeal of Souther's compositions is underscored by the Eagles' choice of a Souther song for the first single off their new album.

This album showcasing his performing career is drawn from four solo albums and two outings with the Souther Hillman Furay Band. It should be stressed that, though best known as a songwriter, Souther is also an outstanding performer, as anyone fortunate enough to have taken in his 2007 UK tour will attest.

This album can be very strongly recommended. If you enjoy it, your next purchase should be 'Black Rose', a superb solo effort released in 1976.

For those not familiar with the work of JD Souther think Eagles,Linda Ronstadt (in her country days)Jackson Browne, Chris Hillman of the Byrds etc. The story goes that JD Souther was sharing an apartment with Glen Frey of the Eagles and the downstairs neighbour was Jackson Browne, out of this mix came the band that backed Linda Ronstadt and went on to form the Eagles.Souther was almost set to join the Eagles but declined prefering to remain in the background writing many of the Eagles tracks and passing on other output to Rondatat who at the time was his partner. A short lived attempt at a country supergroup failed but produced two good but flawed albums Trouble in Mexico and The Souther Hillman and Furay band. this Cd is a compilation of the best of his solo albums and the two Souther Hillman and Furay albums comprising 18 tracks.
audio quality is uniform throughout which is more than can be said for other compliations. It intresting to hear a song like Faithless Love which I recognise from Ronstadts interpretation and compare with the version on this Cd . Overall a very good introduction to the work of this artist for those wishing to explore the California music scene of the early to mid 70's a little further. There has to be omissions of course but these are minor. A recommended purchase for Eagle fans who wish to go a little further

J.D Souther has been one of the most inspiring song writers , singers and band leaders alive today. This work and his forthcoming work are two highlights of music in 2007. JD Southers work is not to be missed.
