Disappointing performance, 28 Dec 2007
I love listening to radio - I've got two portable FM radios in the house, and they get a lot of use, so when I received a Roberts Gemini 55 DAB for Christmas I was delighted: all the existing FM stations, plus the extra DAB-only ones, the ability to record onto SD card, and run my iPod through it! The radio offers plenty of clever features and looks lovely but, when I switched it on I was immediately struck by the poor sound from the speakers. How can Roberts get it so wrong? The sound is boomy and boxy, with too much bass (but not in a pleasant way), and the only way of adjusting the tone is by means of a switch on the side which effectively cuts the bottom end completely so it sounds like old-fashioned Medium Wave! Both myself and my partner were struck by the poor quality - for a portable radio it doesn't offer the brightness or clarity needed for listening in different environments, such as a kitchen. My existing Bush FM radio is cranky and often drifts off station, but has far better audio quality, and a tone control (and it only cost £30).
I tried to learn to love the Gemini 55, but after a few days have decided that it's not good enough, so it's going back. For the price, and from this manufacturer, I expect better.

Audio sd card,what the heck's that?, 8 Jan 2008
fell in love with the thing the moment I got it out of the box,sexy looking thing.Sound quality super as far as I'm concerned,pause function amusing novelty etc.However,I stuck every sd card I own into it(and I got plenty), kept getting message saying "media protected".Rang helpline,they recommended a couple of cards I'd already tried then said I needed an "audio sd card".They also suggested going back to the shop I bought it from and seeing which card they recommend,quite amusing coming from the manufacturer when you think about it.I still adore it though.
PS bought a virgin,fresh out of the box sd card,recorded the radio first and every go.Problem solved,seems it doesn't like them if they've been in a camera previously.

Fine DAB radio with some snags, 31 Aug 2008
This radio has a good DAB reception and good sound quality. I bought 6 4500mAh rechargables for it and they last me about a week of heavy usage (3+ hours a day).
There is a rubber flap on the top to cover the SD slot and USB port. Unfortunately this flat will not close with a card inserted. Sounds like a small point but I find it annoying.
The file name dispay only uses one line and displays the file extention (eg .MP3). This means that nornmal size file names are heavily truncated and difficult the use.
I had to re-format my 2GB SD card on the radio before it would work. Once this was done I could load files on the PC and play them fine on the G55. 2GB is the max supported size but the interface is not good for managing large numbers of files so I think a 1GB card would be optimum.
If you like watching TV sport on SKY and listenting to the BBC commentary this radio is for you as it has a large DAB processing delay which means it synchs up well with the Satellite delay. By comparison my PURE DAB is too fast, giving the commentary before the picture.
