The Most Underrated and Stunningly Brilliant Album of 2007, 2 Jan 2008
I'll start with a basic summary:
This album is breathtakingly good.
I can't believe that it has been released and has flown under the radar, because it definetely does not get the credit it deserves. To the guy that says it sounds like Hundred Reasons I suggest you look for some evidence to back up your claim, apart from the fact that they're both british bands I hear no familiarity between them whatsoever. It's crap comparisons like this that draw people away from picking up the brilliance that is this record. It's that good.
People often compare them to At The Drive-In, who granted were amazing, but this album takes the, pardon me for using this sloppy term - "math-rock" genre and takes it to perfection. Beautiful picked guitar parts to frantic tapping, to harmonised jazz chords, to stunning leading bass lines, unpredictable stop-starts, phenomenally tight drumming, and all paired with a unique voice that carries passion and melody effortlessly without sounding forced.
The fact is that this album doesn't have one weak track. The acoustic track is sombre and gentle, using string arrangements and clicks and pops provided by the talented James and Brendan of Yndi Halda, while the final track is a quiet and beautiful outro, giving you time to reflect on the intensity of the album you just sat through, the calm after a storm if you will. The stand out tracks for me are "Come to New York, there were fewer murders last year" and "Eins Zwei Drei Hasselhoff" both of which are frantic, powerful, erratic and beautiful in a delightful song shaped package.
If you need more convincing this should do it: Alex Newport produced it. Yes, the guy that produced ATDI and The Mars Volta. If you like good bands, if you like interesting, exciting new music and have a brain capacity large enough to take it what these guys from Guildford are offering, then take it.
Now don't waste anymore time, go and buy it. And their E.P too. It's worth every one of your dirty pound coins.
End.

variations on awesome, 25 Oct 2008
Classic british rock record. A beautiful mix of Faraquet, Sweep The Leg Johnny and At The Drive-In: this was really notable stuff. Not a duff track present.
Come back St. Louis!

Fast moving, exciting and kind of unique, 21 Feb 2008
Sure its been done before.
sure it was redorded and produced in america.
and sure it kicks ass.
This band don't seem to mess about.
they've got an album that is not instantly accessible.
some tracks sound positively weak on first listen. yet that is
their beauty.
A rewarding album, similar in vain to early YCNI:M or a light Mars Volta.
No clear structure can mean a concentrated listen is more adviced than simply to have it playing as background noise.
Buy it if you like forward thinking british music, with bad ass flavourings and little moments of genius thrown in for fun.
