PIXMA iP4500 Highlights

1pl Technology

Picolitre size

The size of the ink droplets can vary, and it is this that you quite often see quoted in printer specifications as a Pico litre rating (pl). The Smaller the nozzle jet, the tinier the ink drop, so the more detailed the print image will be.

5 Single Inks

Ink tanks/Cartridges

To minimise ink wastage and protect the environment, Canon’s Single Ink system uses transparent, individually replaceable single colour ink tanks. Each tank incorporates an LED that fl ashes slowly to indicate when ink is low, or rapidly when the tank is empty. To ensure hassle-free installation, the LED also indicates when a tank is incorrectly installed.

Auto Duplex Print

Auto Duplex

Built-in Auto Duplex printing capability is compatible with photo paper as well as plain paper feeding from both Rear Tray and Cassette.

DVD/CD Print

CD/DVD Printing

Built-in tray guide assures easy handling. Precise, fast, high-quality direct printing on DVD/CD media can be ready just with a tray.

Auto Image Fix

Auto Image Fix

Not every photo is perfect; that’s why Canon introduces Auto Image Fix.  It automatically analyses your photo, and then enhances skin tones, colour contrasts and saturations.  Simply scan, and edit them with the easy-to-use software.  Then reprint them to share with family and friends.

ChromaLife 100

ChromaLife 100

ChromaLife100 is a system that improves the beauty and permanence of printed images, realised with the combination of selected Canon inks and papers. By printing with the ChromaLife100 system, your printed photos will resist colour fading for longer, so they can be shared and enjoyed across generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, 26 Dec 2007
I purchased this printer for a variety of printing from basic letters to photos and it's been a breath of fresh air since the last two (disappointing) Epson ink jet printers I have owned. I have a very simple desire when it comes to home computing - I just want it to work. The Canon has done just that. It doesn't jam, it doesn't drink ink, it doesn't move the ink head around for no reason - all things that my previous Epson printers seemed to do. Print quality is great (although I've only printed 6x4 photos so far), ink usage seems fair and it's very quiet. The only downside that I can think of is that it is pretty big but at this price, it's a very minor moan and I'd rather have the larger printer if it means it will continue to be as robust as this one. All in all, the best ink jet printer I have owned in years and I am really pleased to have made the jump to Canon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pix Picked Pix, 11 Nov 2007

Prompt delivery courtesy of Amazon. Always a good start. The box is quite big and the printer larger than I thought but not too large. It was packaged very well and all markable surfaces were covered with a protective plastic film.

When unpacked, the printer looks modern and well designed. It has a sleek minimalist look. It feels solidly put together too. I like it.

There was no USB printer lead included - a bit mean me thinks - but you can buy one here on Amazon for a few quid. I had a spare one.

It comes with a full set of inks which are very easy to fit and a few sheets of paper for head alignment and printing a few pix (you can buy cheap compatible inks for this printer). To get it all working just follow, to the letter, the setup guide and your up a running in no time. The finer points can be learned later. You might line up a few pix you want to print out before it arrives.

There are two paper print paths - rear and via cassette. I fill the cassette with plain paper and use the rear for feeding photo papers. There is a switch on the front which allows you to swap paths at the press of it. There is a back door too to resolve paper jams.

There is another feed path but this is for CD/DVD. It is at the front just above where the paper exits. There is a holder supplied which you place the disk in and then feed into the slot for printing. It only works on disks designed for printing on - those with a printable side.

I have been using Canon Photo Paper Plus semi-gloss for pix and the output is excellent. It will do borderless A4 printing and they look very good. Less than two minutes for a 300dpi borderless A4 photo. Text prints fast and looks very good.

If you have a PictBridge camera etc, then you can print directly from it by attaching it to the front USB port. Personally I prefer to edit what I print. Pictures rarely look that good out of point & shoot.

The supplied software gives you control over power saving and paper feed. For instance I set mine to turn off if not used for an hour. There is a software user guide too. The printer driver has many options for choosing paper and print quality.

One confusing point is the colour profiles provided. They are for different Canon papers but it is not clear which profile to use. Programs like Photoshop require you to specify a profile. Still guessing so far seems to have been okay.

This is not a pro printer. It does not let you control its innards as a pro one would. But it offers enough control for everyday use and the quality of print is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer so far..., 12 Nov 2007
I have had 2 photo priters in the past, both from Epson. Both suffered the same problem, ie they would print good pictures once the ink was flowing but 50% of the expensive ink was wasted in head cleaning. I rather belatedly decided not to make the same mistake a third time (twice is silly, but 3 times would be pathetic) and only looked at printers from HP and Canon. The reviews for the ip4300 were very good, and the ip4500 is basically an updated version of that and at roughly the same great price.

Initial impression was that it is very stylish and shiny if a little large. I don't usually bother reading instructions, but with this one I had to and setup is pretty easy if you follow them.

The first prints I got were superb even using all the default settings and not the best paper. The colours were accurate and printing was very fast compared to my previous printers. Having the 2 paper trays allows me to have plain and photo paper permanently loaded which I know saves me time faffing around swapping paper. I haven't used the CD printer yet because I don't have any printable disks, but its a nice feature which I expect to use it when I do get some suitable media.

The standard ink cartridges seem to be expensive, but I see it's possible to buy cheaper replacements. It appears to be economical with the ink too. With my Epsons the displayed ink level visibly moved downwards with each print, but this Canon's ink level hasn't moved yet after quite a number of 4x6 prints.

Having no USB A/B cable supplied is a little mean but I already had several spare ones.
So far I can't fault it.
