Product Description

Early '80s slasher movie. One of the highlights of the genre, due mainly to superior special effects and make-up by Tom Savini, the plot stems from events in 1945. After sending her soldier boyfriend a 'Dear John' letter, a young college graduate and her new boyfriend are horrifically murdered at that year's graduation dance. With the murderer never caught, the town refuses to hold another dance for the next 35 years. Jump forward to 1980 when the dance is finally reinstated, and it's not long before history repeats itself as a figure in military garb begins dispatching students in a variety of blood-splattering ways.

Was watching a documentary about the awesome Tom Savini last week and they showed clips of The Prowler from 1981...just had to get it!

Released in the UK as Rosemary's Killer, it's your basic stalk n slash flick much in the same vein as Friday 13th/The Burning ect. The difference here is that the killings are super gory!! And no cut-away's either, showing the unique talents of Savini in all it's glory. Some of the killings had me want to look away as compared to other movies they are quite disgusting, but hey, that's what we watch movies like this for right??!! There are some genuinely creepy moments too, it ain't all about the gore.

This Optimun release boasts a super sharp widescreen transfer and the sound is very clear too. No extras on this UK release. I haven't seen this movie before but it says on the back cover that this is released uncut for the first time on DVD. To be honest, this wouldn't have been passed by the BBFC back in 1981 unless some of these scenes were cut.

So glad I bought this to add to my horror collection. I still have to get The Burning, but if anybody can recommend some other lesser-known classics then feel free to comment!

Can't comment on the DVD but I remember this VERY well from the early 80s VHS. In fact, my mates and I used to rent this at least 4 or 5 times a year - for the FANTASTIC gore fx by maestro Tom Savini.
The plot, a maniacal, homicidal GI (in full army gear with helmet and face mask) allowed for many gruesome deaths; bayonet through the top of the head, pitchfork through TWO bodies, a throat cut under water and the best exploding head via sawn off shotgun effect I have seen, even up to now!
I don't even think the VHS was fully uncut, despite the plentiful splatter - I will buy this DVD asap IF I know for sure, that this is at least as bloody as the VHS of my teenage years.
File with The Burning and My Bloody Valentine - VERY similiar movies in gore, themes, characters and killers!

Avalon Bay, New Jersey. 1980. The preparations for the annual graduation dance are well underway. There has not been such an event at Avalon Bay since 1945, when a horrific double murder occured. So starting the graduation dance again might be a way for the residents of Avalon Bay to bury the skeletons from the past. The murderer from 1945, never caught, has been very patient too, waiting those thirty five long years to start killing again.
This is a decent enough old-school slasher. In fact it does build up considerable tension during some scenes and also seems to be trying to tell a story in between the gory set pieces. It is these bloody murders, however, that are the main selling point for this film. Tom Savini's incredible make up make some of the death scenes difficult to watch to this day.
The cast all do a pretty good job. Christopher Goutman is excellent as rookie cop Mark London, left in charge of what soon becomes an escalating crisis, whilst the Sheriff goes on a fishing trip. Farley Granger plays the Sheriff, and it his presence as well as a cameo from Lawrence Tierney that also lends some gravitas to proceedings.
When Rosemary's Killer finished, all I was left with was an empty feeling inside. For all its considerable style and its pretence of telling a story, in the end all that it is, is a series of bloody deaths and occasional plot exposition. In fact, the conclusion left me quite dissatisfied as many plot threads were not tied up succesfully.
So one for fans of the slasher genre or 80's horror, but nothing remarkable to set it apart from its ilk, Rosemary's Killer is a decent enough horror but in my opinion not an essential purchase. As usual, the Optimum release has no real extras but boasts a fine picture/sound quality. It is also not uncut, running at just over 84 mins. 3 out of 5.

Students at a graduation dance are being stalked and killed by a someone wearing a military outfit just like a similar event 35 years earlier.

Chilling little slasher movie with some excellent gore effects. Yes the story may not be very original but it is handled well with its story coming through very smoothly and is never boring, director Joseph Zito creates a very tense and suspenseful atmosphere, even within the frame of a fairly nondescript scene the creepy air keeps up and the film is far better because of it. The gore effects by wizard Tom Savini are brilliant, the throat cutting and knife going through the head are two standouts but there are more, the effects are quite strong but not offensively so. Performances are good, Vicky Dawson & Christopher Goutman do a very good job in the two lead roles and veteran Farley Granger adds a bit of stature to the film. The weakest part of the film is the killer, it is frankly so obvious who the killer is, there's no point in him wearing a hooded mask at all, the kills themselves are very tense and exciting especially at the climax.

Tom Savini's effects were a double edged saw for the film, strong and believable but a little to believable for the authorities here in Britain where it became a Section 3 nasty title. One of the scariest and best of the golden era of slasher's, a real 80's horror treat.
