Product Description

Description

This 31-piece Algerian chaabi ensemble includes multiple vocalists, drummers, oud-players, flautists, string musicians, and a piano--the latter played by musical director Abdel Hadi Halo, son of chaabi pioneer Hadj El Anka. This spectacular recording session was assembled as a reunion of some of chaabi's greatest vets, and was also filmed for a documentary,in the manner of the Buena Vista Social Club. The long, mesmerizing songs are high on drama, but never lapse into melodrama, and feature virtuosic instrumentation that will appealto world music fans of all stripes.

5.0 out of 5 stars El gusto , 11 Oct 2007
The CD has not yet been released, so my comments are on the music of these remarkable men as they played last night (October 10th)at the Barbican. Jewish and Muslim musicians from the Casbah of Algiers re-united by a young woman of Jewish-Muslim Algerian parentage, these old men played with all the vigour and passion of their youth and their performance resonated with sheer enthusiasm and enjoyment. The technical virtuosity was extraordinary, their music heartfelt and inspiring and the smiles on their faces after all they had been through in the political upheavals of the 20th century reflected all the best that humanity can be. Sheer delight!

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor audio quality, 22 Oct 2007

This is a nice album but it could have been great if the sound quality was better. The percussion section is very muffled and to be honest it sounds more like a bootleg. The album was not recorded in a studio, but that shouldnt be an excuse, as many Zanzibar albums have not been recorded in studios and the quality if fine. Honest Jon's should have done better and if they are planning a Vol 2 with Medioni and other Jewish musicians then it needs to have much better sound than this. A missed opportunity that could have made this album great - in the end it does a disservice to the musicians.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity, 25 Oct 2007

Agree witht the last reviewer. There is some great music here, but the poor sound quality means you won't listen to this much. I hope that someone will do a proper recording; it could be fatastic!
