Product Description

CD Description

Close-harmony vaudeville revivalist trio The Puppini Sisters specialise in, as well as beloved jazz standards and original compositions, quirky covers of contemporary classics in their own inimitable style. Among those cover versions on their second LP, 'The Rise And Fall Of Ruby Woo', are Barry Manilow's 'Could It Be Magic' and Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love', nestling beside Duke Ellington's 'It Don't Mean A Thing If ItAin't Got That Swing'. Garnering mass acclaim for their bizarre fusion of styles, The Puppini sisters occupy a unique space in retro culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great musicians, duff engineering!, 13 Oct 2007
By M. Rathney-quinn "MRQ" (Near Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This one narrowly missed the five stars; let down by the recording itself.

The girls (and the guys who're backing them) are their usual superb selves. The musicianship is fantastic as is the humour and 'life' behind the music. From that perspective it's flawless and you MUST buy this album. If you've not discovered the Puppini Sisters yet you're really missing out.

What spoiled the album for me though was the TERRIBLE recording! I don't know if they involved some jackass who was trying to get a '40's sound (he/she failed!) or if the studio they used had duff monitoring or if quite simply the engineer\producer didn't know his or her job! I'd put money on the latter...

What SHOULD be a spectacularly dynamic and lively album was ruined by naff EQ, inappropriate use of compression, poor mic technique and generally a very 'wooly' stereo image and poor mix. I found myself adjusting the EQ on my system for almost every track. I actually thought my system was faulty! It isn't as I confirmed by playing other material (including their last album) to confirm it was ok.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD, 21 Nov 2007
By S. Wales "Simon W" (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was already a fan of the Puppini Sisters's first CD and they are an amazing live act. I think the new CD is excellent, with really memorable new songs like Jilted and Soho Nights, and you've got to hear their cover of Beyonce's Crazy In Love - brilliant. It's not as commercial as the first CD, but its a CD I have already listened to many many times, and I really hope they get the chance to make a 3rd CD soon! It also makes me laugh on a regular basis, and I'm making all my friends listen to it!

By Benno Slater "Benno" (Greenwich, London) - See all my reviews
Oh my god! I've just seen the video for Spooky... those little vixens look amazing. Had a listen to the rest of the tracks and they just ooze cool... nice to hear a group doing something different for a change. Worth every penny!
