Deadly Friend is an over looked gem of a movie. Mixing up sci fi and horror the movie is able to keep you both entertained and glued to the movie without ever feeling bored.

The main plus and why Deadly Friend works is that it is filled with likeable characters and a decent script. The movie is not without humour, where you will be laughing hard at a few intentionals scenes. However this is not a comedy, and there is plenty of tension throughtout.

Wes Craven has made better films- and although Deadly Friend cannot be considered one of his best, it is a crime that this film still remains unseen by most. Evidence in the fact that all of Craven's films have a region 2 release but this one.

Deadly Friend is able to patch three sepearte stories up, show sensitivity, horror and gore and come out the other side leaving the viewer more than happy.

An oddity for sure, but it works.

I've been on a Wes Craven kick lately and Deadly Friend has got to be one of Craven's weirdest films I've ever seen. It has much of Craven's positive attributes, while at the same time bordering on a silliness that may turn some horror fans off. The story concerns Paul (Matthew Laborteaux), a teenage genius, who has built a truly artificially intelligent robot named Bee Bee and who has just received a scholarship to college to study neuroscience. He moves into a new home close to the college with his mom, and has to contend with some unruly neighbors, chief among them the abusive dad of the cute girl next door. At school, Paul is discovering how to reanimate dead brains, and when his friend Sam played by Kristy Swanson whom he has a crush on is killed, he puts his knowledge to use in a manner not completely unlike Dr. Frankenstein. Much of this sounds silly, and in ways it is. It's not easy to create an atmosphere of horror with a cute robot, and at times the robot's voice is irritating. Still, Craven displays his directing skills throughout Deadly Friend, and the robot scenes are entertaining nonetheless. The best material comes with the showpiece of the film, Paul's next door neighbor "Sam" (Kristy Swanson). Kristy Swanson is pure delight as his "girl next door love" and her robotic moves are surprisingly well executed. Like in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Craven is able to create characters who you actually give a damn about and that's what makes this silly premise actually work. The film is pretty funny at times and the graphic horror is sure to delight gore hounds. The basketball head explosion scene alone is outstanding. For the most part Deadly Friend is more actual fun than suspenseful, although it does have a few well timed shocks. All in all; A nice effort from Craven. Pretty inventive and overcomes it's weaknesses by being just a plain old fun flick.

The everyday story of one boy and his robot moving to a new house and making new friends and enemies.

But seeing as this is Wes Craven, something sinister is bound to happen. with a basket ball!

It's an odd choice of movie for Craven, seeing that he had just made one of the most iconic horror movies of all time two years earlier, but there is still a lot of fun to be had.

I had no idea what the main plot device was, I just knew it was a Craven film I had never heard of, so I thought the first act was about a killer robot, and that 'BB' would become more sinister as the film progressed.

Then Kristy Swanson, gets thrown down the stairs, and then we are back in full Craven mode, with a little eighties cheese thrown in.

The performances are okay, Paul spends the film looking sweaty, Swanson is good, but the Darryl Hannah eye make up thing doesn't look like your decaying.

And for some reason, Paul's friend just keeps fainting.

The basketball scene is truly amazing, and depending on how you are feeling, you will either laugh or just groan.

It's a very hard to find movie, but if you do find it, and love all things eighties, this will suit you.

And it's a guarantee this will never be remade..

REVIEWED VERSION: 2007 Warner Bros. German DVD

Director: Wes Craven

Cast: Kristy Swanson, Matthew Labyorteaux, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Anne Ramsey, Richard Marcus, Lee Paul

SYNOPSIS

Paul Conway (Matthew Labyorteaux) just moved to town with his mom and his robot "BB", which he constructed himself. He meets Samantha (Kristy Swanson) and quickly falls in love with her, until her abusive father "accidentally" kills her.
To save her, Paul breaks into the hospital and implants his robot's microchip into Sam's brain to revive her. Frankensam then goes vigilante and hunts down bullies and abusive dads... 'nuff said.

THE PROS & CONS

DEADLY FRIEND was originally supposed to be a PG sci-fi/romance with no gore whatsoever. Warner Bros., wanting to cash in on THE NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET success, forced Craven to re-shoot and add 6 gory scenes, including the notorious "basketball decapitation", which awarded the film the infamous X rating and needed to be replaced by a less gory shot for the theatrical release. Several scenes needed trimming and it was submitted to the MPAA 13 times. The gore scenes are fun to watch, quite bloody but rather ridiculous.
The movie was cut/pre-cut for the UK BBFC 18 and German FSK 16 VHS releases. The German region 2 DVD reviewed here is also rated 16 and is the uncut X rated version. There are two releases in the US: a DVD containing only this film and a 4 disc set which also contains 3 other movies (Eyes of a Stranger, The Hand, Someone's Watching Me). While the German DVD is region 2 only, the US DVDs are encoded regions 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The characters overall lack depth.
