Product Description

Description

British one-man-band Songs of the Green Pheasant (also known as Duncan Sumpner) specializes in hazy shades of neo-psychedelia more in keeping with the vintage likes of Donovan or newcomers to the style such as Devendra Banhart than with the more aggressive electric set. GYLLYING STREET, the third Songs of Green Pheasant album, has the watery, abstract vibe of Robert Wyatt's solo material, and Sumpner's first-time inclusion of guest musicians helps make it Songs of Green Pheasant's most varied and musically accomplished release yet. Highlights include the ghostly "The Ballad of Century Paul".

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely pleasant street, 22 Sep 2007

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
There are times when hearing a new band for the first time they remind so much of someone else that you have to check to see that it isn't them under a pseudonym or a new band featuring former members. Anyway on hearing Songs Of Green Pheasant for the first time and most noticeably opening track "Boats" I did the check but it turns out Songs Of Green Pheasant is ostensibly the work of one man -Duncan Sumpner ,a 32 year old artist and teacher from Sheffield ,and that Gyllyng Street is actually his third album. Which is amazing because much of this album and "Boats" especially sound so much like early nineties indie darlings Bark Psychosis it is truly uncanny.
Now before anyone gets the erroneous impression I am implying that Duncan Sampler is guilty of copying or plagiarising Bark Psychosis I must make it clear that isn't the case. I do not know if the man has even heard of Bark Psychosis let alone anything by them .The crystalline guitars of "Boats" though recall "Manman" or "A Street Scene" better than anything I have heard since . This is a big compliment just to wrap that point up.
Sumpner has created a music on 4 track and 8 track machines that invokes a widescreen sense of awe but maintains a delicacy and empathic sense of space . His vocals , sparsely used ,are tremulous and slightly hesitant but suit's the music's elusive ambience. "West Coast Profiling" is obstreperous by this albums standards with jarring (relatively) outbursts of vivid piano and those gemstone guitars. Best of all is "Alex Drifting Alone" which adds a truly plaintive trumpet( courtesy of Clive Scott) and reminds me of nothing less than the magnificent Blue Nile of "Walk Across The Rooftops" era. That is a very big compliment. "Fires PGR" ushers in Julie Cole on vocal duty and she adds a vaguely spectral timbre to the creaking keyboards and hypnotic self-possessed percussion.
The only track that doesn't work for me is the final "A Sketch For Maenporth" which is a more avant garde sound collage based around an annoying scratching sound and some tardy wispy keyboards. It's eight minutes long and very much outstays its welcome.
Overall though Gyllyng Street" is a lovingly crafted exercise in and restraint and patience and it requires that same commitment from the listener .It wont give out instant gratification but its textures and implicit details are worth sticking with if you don,t get it on a the first listen. Like many artists on the "Fat Cat " label over the years this is music that revels in facets and vestigial tones. A multifarious mottled delight.
