Product Description

Description

Sometimes it really is all about who you know. And for the one-time Los Angeles duo Qui, knowing former Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow was all it took to put the band on the map.Relatively m.i.a. since the demise of the Jesus Lizard in the late 1990s, Yow reentered the rock fray in 2006 after hooking up with Los Angeles art metalists Matt Crunk and Paul Christensen. The result is an album not too dissimilar musically from prime Jesus Lizard, though with perhaps a touch more prog-metal pyrotechnics. The most striking difference between Qui and the Jesus Lizard, however, is in Yow himself, who, although still deliciously demented, has added a few new voices to his arsenal, including one that could rightfully be called a croon. Whatever the case, it's nice to have that lunatic back on the streets.

5.0 out of 5 stars The triumphant return of the very wonderful Mr yow., 15 Oct 2008
By Ms. Jc Perkin "The Perkulator" (manchester england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As good as much of mid to late Jesus Lizard, and that ladies and gentlemen is indeed high praise. Beatifully punchy with hidden complexities and the inimitable Mr Yow's delightful touches all over it.

Highly rated.

4.0 out of 5 stars you can't keep a bad man down, 9 Sep 2009
By radio atlantis "follow me not" (tha north of ireland) - See all my reviews
ok, hands up who wondered how long it would take before david yow got bored with the graphic design, or whatever it was?
after the untimely demise of the jesus lizard most focus was on what mr yow would do next. i was unaware of this band for some time, coming across them by accident
so what of the album then. well, and apologies for harping on about the lizard - but that's what most people reading this will be familiar with - it's about half a good album. it starts off very well but fades badly. the sound is pure rock, a huge sound created. though, oddly enough, all done without bass. when i first read the sleevenotes i thought this was odd, but tbh you hardly miss it. best tracks are 'gash' and 'freeze'. one last point about the jesus lizard and then i'll give it a rest; i played my brother 'i can learn' once and he never guessed who it was. testament to their versatility as musicians, but also to mr yow's vocal abilities. he can sing when he wants to, and he does here too - sometimes at least
as a previous reviewer has pointed out this album is released on mike patton's ipecac label, home to a few oddball acts in its time. and maybe this person had a point about qui's previous album. all i can say is that this one makes me want to check it out. and no matter what, that's due to what everyone has done here, not just the lizard man
3.5/5, round up

2.0 out of 5 stars Then and Yow (ouch), 9 April 2009
David Yow's reputation preceeds him, unfortunately for Qui theirs does not. Their first album "Baby Kisses" on the Heart of a Champion label is very good - just a guitar and drums two-piece, with Matt Cronk doing all the singing. Yow's input has seemingly been to completely change the band's raw sound and add all that sneering sarcasm that frequently ruined Jesus Lizard material. There is no doubt that the first Qui album was influenced by the Jesus Lizard. In fact the 5 minute mid album bore "Belt" demonstartes this most clearly and is the one low point. In places it also brings to mind French Jesus Lizard fans Gatechien - a drums and bass two piece and who would equally suffer from the input of their hero.

Where previously Qui's spitting attack was firmly a punk rock thing now it straddles that artistically suicidal divide between punk and alternative metal thanks to Yow's moaning, nasal whine and a new mushy guitar sound. Remember though that this record is out on Ipecac whose co-founder Mike Patton, though he may have diversified in the past ten years, is the original pee-drinking, sneering punk/metal post-ironist and member of a series of god-awful hybrid metal bands.

Even if you've enjoyed this record, I would recommend trying to get your hands on "Baby Kisses", it's available from the HoaC label. Maybe the saving grace of "Love's Miracle" is that the first album might not have been heard if Yow hadn't joined up.
