Product Description
Description
This mammoth chronicle of the legendary Bob Dylan's five-decade-spanning career contains his best-known works (among them 'The Times They Are A-Changing' and the oft-covered 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door') as well as some obscure tracks from his more experimental periods. Though he was originally notable for his politically motivated anthems, a focus on musical progression has prevailed in later recordings. With Dylan's never-ending touring schedule and frequently evolving creative output still flourishing, this retrospective is as timely as it is detailed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good compilation for Dylan newbies, 20 Nov 2007
By DJColzz "DJ MacDonald" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
OK so you're not gonna get those happy joy-joy feelings when listening to Bob Dylan, in fact to the untrained ear, listening too often may bring on serious bouts of depression. Cos well, bless him he's just not the happy go-lucky type is he? 8 -)

What you get though is a musical journey of a sheer genius at work, it is particularly poignant to note that most of Dylan's more political views are relevant even forty years (or so) later.

Dylan writes of life with a unique openness that gives new meaning to the phrase "wearing his heart on his sleeve". Dylan is one of the most prolific songwriters to have ever been born. Anyone who is anyone in the rock world has covered a Dylan song. I would have liked a few inclusions, and in particular I was always fond of "Jokerman" from 'Infidels', but it must be a nightmare task trying to funnel down tracks for such a reputable compilation as this.

If you're new to Dylan (what planet have you been on?) This is the place to start, I always think that any serious music connoisseur should have three maybe four Dylan albums in their collection at least. Familiarise yourself with his work here, but I suggest getting hold of his studio albums and hear the man at his raw best. Like most longstay artists he has made a duff one or two, but in general Dylan is king and is granddaddy to every other rock artist you hear today!

Excellent!!!
