5.0 out of 5 stars Lurid and Beautiful, 28 Dec 2008
By Christopher Othen (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pulp Culture (Paperback)
'Pulp Culture' is a large format, full colour softback art book packed to the rafters with reproductions of American pulp magazine covers. Most date from the pulp's high point in the interwar years with a fair sprinkling of illustrations from earlier and later periods. It's a beautifully put together production.

American pulp magazines were lurid and cheap fiction factories that pumped out tales of adventure, romance, sport and war to a hungry audience. They got their name because of the cheap wood pulp paper used to cut costs. In contrast the covers were glossy and colourful affairs by talented illustrators, often working only for money on subjects they thought beneath them.

Full colour, informative text - what more could you ask for? Anyone interested in pulps, American culture or just superb illustators should pick up this book. Where else can you find the edition of Zeppelin Stories (a magazine devoted to ... well, you can guess) that features a story called 'Gorilla Of The Gas Bags'?
