Or at least it would have been had I not already owned 11 of the 24 songs. Not a complaint - I knew this before I bought, so highly do I regard this artist.

This is a compilation album covering the period 1983-1992 and includes 10 songs that appear on the scarce and splendid 'Down to the Bone' (a 6 star CD if there ever was one) and a new verson of her 'A Place Called England' (a previous version is on 'Getting There'). The other 14 tracks have not appeared on CD before.

Overall, the album is her usual mix of traditional numbers, self-penned songs (some with Jon Moore) and covers (Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn, Robb Johnson.....). Stylistically more varied than her previous CDs - as one would expect from a compilation.

Fine vocals and good (and restrained) instrumentation make this a joy to listen to. Personal favourites among the 14 songs new to CD include a mighty version of Bruce Cockburn's 'If I Had a Rocket Launcher', the extraordinary 'Mad Lydia's Waltz' (with John Kirkpatrick) and the two traditional numbers 'Vandy' and 'Banks of the Nile'.

My only reservation is that it's a digipak - am I the only person who detests these things? A damaged jewel case can be replaced - a damaged digipak results in damaged artwork.
