Video Description

What if your good-for-nothing brother set you up on a hot date and got the gender wrong...or did he? Todd (Jonathan Bray), a straight guy, goes to work every day and then comes home with nary a date on the horizon. That is, until his goofy brother, Barry (Jonathan Silverman), sets him up on his very first internet get-together, a coffee date with a hottie named Kelly. Todd gets to the café and the only unattached person there is a gay guy...guess what: his name is Kelly (Wilson Cruz of "My So-Called Life" and "Noah's Arc"). After a brief, clumsy realization that a straight guy has been set up with a gay guy, the two men hit it off as friends. To get retaliation against his brother, Todd and Kelly head back to the house and hold hands in front of the mystified brother. Their joke works as Barry summons Mom (Sally Kirkland) in for the new family crisis. Mom decides that she loves her gay son and joins PFLAG. As word spreads that he is "openly gay" and has a nice gay lover, the situation spins hilariously out of control and nothing Todd says can convince people otherwise. Yet he prefers his new best friend Kelly's company; maybe he is gay after all?

Synopsis

Todd is in for a big surprise when he goes to meet Kelly, the hot girl his brother set him up with. Turns out Kelly isn't a girl at all, but a gay man. However, the joke's on Todd's brother when the two pretend to be an item, shocking their friends and families. Of course, there's always the possibility that it's not a put-on, and that their blind date over coffee has turned into something more than just a humourous prank...

1.0 out of 5 stars cliche ridden bland froth , 13 Jan 2008

anodyne mildly homophobic hugely compromised story of sexual confusion after a blind date in a coffee shop. Clarification comes in the form of straight bloke getting drunk and having sex with gay bloke, then straight blokes brother comes out and it gets worse. There's no sex and it sets back gay stereotypes 10 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whimsy with wry humour, 1 Feb 2008

I enjoyed this. A lot. The two leads are great in their own right, and complement each other well. The running gag with the mother is very true to life, and the twist with the brother at the end works well in that context as well. There are bits I didn't find convincing, but then again - who knows?

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but nothing really wrong, 19 Aug 2008
By J. A. Walls "jamwalls" (Richmond Upon Thames) - See all my reviews

Todd is very much the essence of metrosexual. He takes pride in his appearance, worries about hair loss and takes longer in the shower than his ex wife. His layabout brother Barry places a lonely hearts advert for him in the 'men seeking men' category. After a few emails and no photo exchange Todd goes on his date to meet Kelly. Kelly of course is a hunky guy and as soon as they can both laugh about it, they decide to pay the brother back by pretending that the date went really well and Todd has discovered his inner gay.
This leads to a snowball effect of friends, family and coworkers all believing (a bit too easily for Todd's liking) that he is actually gay. No-one wants to listen when he says it was a joke, and as his friendship with Kelly begins to develop, he has to ask himself whether or not his friends could be right...

This film isn't bad, and I don't think it is as cliched in it's characters as some may see it. The story is nothing new and sadly this is it's biggest let down because if you are going to rehash an old story, you really want to do something spectacluar whereas Coffee Date plays it safe safe safe.

There is a lovely chemistry between the two leads, and you can genuinely see why they would become friends, but the age old "am I aren't I?" question starts getting a bit old.

All in all, it's an enjoyable movie to watch one rainy sunday, but I wouldn't be rushing out to buy it.
