Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the more interesting and diverting shows of recent times has seen former Royal Marine Bruce Parry head off to the far reaches of the planet to live among the various tribes of the world. And with all three series of the intriguing Tribe now collected together in this one sit, it’s an invitation to catch up on his adventures that you’d be unwise to decline.

The central idea finds Parry adopting the workings, methods and practices of the tribes that he spends time with. And the reason this works so well is Parry himself, providing a respectful, clear and calm core to a programme that could so easily have fallen foul of many assorted trappings of the genre. His findings throughout Tribe are frequently fascinating, and the programme itself is diligently paced to give you ample opportunity to take it all in. It’s immersive and genuinely involving television.

The episodes collected together in this Tribe boxset find Parry travelling through the likes of Ethiopia, Mongolia and the Himalayas, and there’s a real sense of not knowing what you’re going to discover when each episode begins. Marry that into episodes with strong rewatch value--for both educational and entertainment purposes--and Tribe emerges as little short of a modern television treat. --Jon Foster

DVD Description

Former Royal Marine officer and expedition leader Bruce Parry, sheds the trappings of a western existence and lives alongside tribes, such as the forest people of central Gabon, adopting their methods and practices.

Taking adventure into a whole new realm, Parry dares to go where other presenters fear to tread: hunting, cooking and eating like a native and even trying the local recreational and ritualistic poisons. He also examines the way in which western influence is encroaching on these remote areas and asks whether this is a good thing.

This box set includes series 1, 2 and 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best television series of the last decade, 5 Sep 2007
By Ian Armer (Lancashire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
Is 'Tribe' one of the greatest television programmes of the past 10 years? Absolutely. And all because it manages to show real people, living real lives, with genuine unflinching insight and touching emotion. No other television programme has come close to genuinely captivating the viewer, raising serious issues - and that covers issues of family and society - in a meaningful, relevant way that does not feel 'forced' or sugar coated. 'Tribe' is, simply, brilliant.

Bruce Parry is the perfect anchor for the series. He is perfectly normal and down to earth in every way, and - of course - the fact that he constantly makes an idiot out of himself endears him to the viewer. From drinking blood, to tripping out, spewing, getting naked, breaking important hunting equipment, almost falling off a cliff, allowing reindeer to drink his urine, leaping over cows, killing cows with a spear, losing vast amounts of weight, being whipped, bitten, stung, laughed at...the guy takes it all in good spirits. He gets by on sheer determination and the fact that he just gets stuck in 100%

The fact is you can't manufacture these moments. It's edited to form a coherant form for every episode (usually based around Bruce undergoing initiation rites) but no other programme could ever (fictionally) recreate the genuine humanity on show throughout this series.

Another important aspect of this series is that it truly shows our society to be a consumer mad engine that is devouring these lands and forcing these people to adopt to our ways, when it's really not necessary. Indeed, it gives one chance to think that maybe the tribe have got it right?

That's why 'Tribe' is one the great television programmes. It's more than Bruce Parry making a fool of himself. It's much more than seeing how other people live and feeling content with what we have. It's a series that is a genuine look at humanity, at what development and society is, at what is being lost forever in the name of progress.

It's an essential purchase. It's a brilliant series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential is an overrated term these days..., 14 Nov 2007

But this programme merits the accolade of 'essential viewing' if ever I saw one. I agree fully with the reviewer who states that this is one of the best series of factual programme of the past decade, if not the best. I simply cannot remember seeing anything as engrossing, informative and touching as this for a long time, if ever. This series really needed to be made, and is a must have for any armchair anthropologists out there.

Well done the BBC

And well done Bruce!

Fascinating.

Fantastic series! Very interesting and very well produced. The crew have seemingly tried to be as un-intrusive as possible whilst filming these remote tribes.
