Synopsis

Two kids find a bizarre box on the beach and are soon exhibiting signs of off-the-chart genius in this gently mind-blowing fantasy film. Little Emma (Rhiannon Leigh Wryn) finds a cute bunny doll in the box, who talks to her in electronic code, and Noah (Chris O’Neil) learns to speak in a frequency that lets him control spiders. The kids learn to move objects via psychokinesis and communicate telepathically. Naturally, their parents (Timothy Hutton and Joely Richardson) wonder what is going on here. Noah’s science teacher (Rainn Wilson) has dreams predicting all this, centreed on a mandala symbol from ancient Tibetan Buddhism, which Noah draws in class. Michael Clarke Duncan is suitably dour as the Homeland Security official who investigates when the kids’ newfound power creates a major blackout across Seattle. Parents who cringe at the vulgarity of many kid films will certainly appreciate THE LAST MIMZY’s sweet-natured awe towards the natural world and its inhabitants, which comes without extraneous action or excessive musical bombast. The film moves with a poetic grace, calling attention to environmental and social problems without preaching, and creating the possibility for a genuinely better world. The child actors are real naturals who are allowed to talk and sound like kids, and car chases and explosions are all but absent in place of genuine mystery and excitement about human potential. It's rare to find a sci-fi film that makes the future seem worth saving, so consider this one a true gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doomed due to stupid title, 23 Aug 2007
By David Stevenson "Roguepsi" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
May I start by saying that I follow films.......But I had not even heard of this one. The title suggests a pile of pooh!....don't be fooled. I watched this last night with my family and was swept up in the adventure. This is a gem of a family film, moving and joyful. The special effects are top notch, but equally matched by the actors. I have read that this is the best Sci-Fi/Adventure movie since "ET"....It may not be but it comes pretty dam close. Watch it it's wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mimsy Marvel, 9 Sep 2007
By Winters Kiss (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
'When Noah and Emma Wilder discover a special box on the beach, they open it and unlock an exciting adventure beyond imagination. Inside they find Mimsy, a magical stuffed rabbit along with other mystical toys, which give the children exceptional powers of their own. Able to move objects with their minds and solve complex equations, these new wonder kids begin to attract the attention of their parents, teachers...and even the FBI. Surrounding the phenomenon of Mimsy is an awesome secret - one that holds the key to saving the future of all mankind'

I adore this film. Rest assured that this is not only a film for children, but one for all ages. It is indeed 'magical' and I really liked the references to Alice and the looking glass with her white rabbit.
Good, interesting plot with great action. This film is a must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Mimzy - Exceeds Expectations, 1 Sep 2007
By Angela R (Lincolnshire, England) - See all my reviews
I took my daughter (aged 10) and nephew (aged 9) to the cinema to see this film before it was released on DVD. The title is not the best and leaves a lot to be desired, but personally, I think that this has to be one of the best children's films I have seen since Mary Poppins! I got hooked into the story at the beginning and was sorry when it ended. I thought it was captivating.

I'm not into science fiction, which is bascially what this is based on, and thought that ET was good when it was released, but I was absolutely blown away by this particular story. My nephew went along with us for the ride, but came out of the cinema chattering away saying how brilliant it was and that it was the best film he'd ever seen! Believe me, that's a great accolade to the actors, script writers and directors etc.

This gets a great seal of approval; I'm now going to buy it on DVD so the rest of the family can share in it's wonder.
