Over the Rhine comprise soulmates Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler and they were were recently included in Paste Magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Living Songwriters. With The Trumpet Child they rise to that generous accolade with eleven new originals that find them earmarking some of the most interesting eras of the American songbook, and blending them into a sound all their own.

The Trumpet Child is a collaboration with ultra-talented Nashville producer/arranger Brad Jones (Matthew Sweet, Josh Rouse, Ron Sexsmith, Richard Julian et al) that celebrates American music in the most richly imaginative ways. Jones has tapped the back alleyways of Nashville for an arresting array of horn, woodwind and string players to festoon the trademark simplicity of Over The Rhine, and the result is a juicy, informally-epic pop album unlike any other you’re likely to hear this year.

Karin’s torchy, heart-on-her sleeve seductive voice brims with soul, and the album unfolds like an evening of alternative cabaret, or an all-night performance at a private party, with friends passing around instruments together way into the wee hours.

This really does deserve 5 stars. It has hints of blues, jazz, soul, country and torch, wrapped in perfect pop melodies. The instrumentation is simple but varied, with clarinet, pedal steel and solo piano. If you like Norah Jones "Feels like Home", Rilo Kiley, Camera Obscura or Shelby Lynne give this a listen. I was hooked by one 30 second sample!

First encounter Over the Rhine supporting the Cowboy Junkies - and instantly loved 'em. This album though, is in a class of it's own. It's funky, it's sexy, it's bluesy, it's their best yet. And lovers of Tom Waites will indentify with the penultimate track. A welcome addition to my collection.

I came across Over the Rhine by chance on the internet. We were visiting San Francisco on holiday and were looking for bands to check out and here they were! We purchased this album when we arrived and really enjoyed it. The band were promoting this album on their tour, and what a show it was - superb. They actually played the whole album which suited us as this was the only album we had heard, since then we have virtually bought their full collection. I am sure you will not be disappointed when you hear this cd. You will want to buy another and another!
