At last, The Practice has become available on DVD. This precursor to Boston Legal by David E. Kelley has humour, pace, and style and is a clever social commentary on all that is wrong the US justice system. It's full of twists and turns and the lawyers at Donnell, Dole, Frutt and Young keep the banter coming. This is a series that could have been another glossy story of conflict among the wealthy middle classes but it is far more complex than this, engaging instead with themes such as poverty, racism, and power structures without ever losing its dry wit. If you enjoyed Hill Street Blues or the West Wing, don't miss this. It's one of the best TV series that has ever been produced.

THE PRACTICE VOLUME ONE

Having only discovered The Practice because of my fondness for James Spader and William Shatner, I took the plunge and bought this DVD release. The first thing I noticed is that the DVD only has 13 episodes. So it includes the first season with the pilot and half the second season. I can't see any logic in releasing the first volume in this half arsed way. It must be a legal thing.

As for the show itself, I thought it was excellent. The cast is talented and likable. The scripts are tight and intelligent. All in all this is a very good show and I cannot recommend it highly enough. As a final note, I hope the seasons, which include Shatner and Spader, are released soon as that was the prime reason for my investment in this smart show.
