Product Description

Jazzwise, (Tony Hall), July 2007

(4 stars) Empirical could turn out to be one of the most important
bands in UK jazz history.

Jazzwise, (Tony Hall), July 2007

Their debut album is outstanding. It's not just another jazz
quintet, but a proper band, encompassing jazz's past present and future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empirical - the future of jazz?, 20 Jul 2007
By Mr. Garry Corbett "craftysnapper" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are in any way a fan of cutting edge modern jazz buy this album. Empirical are a young firey British band who somehow seem to have absorbed the history of jazz in their short lives & fashioned something original & exciting from it. Live they are even more astonishing & I strongly recommend that you get to see them if you are able.

The album is packed full of original compositions, superb playing & the sense that these guys are the real deal. Very highly recommended....

5.0 out of 5 stars This is really special!, 6 Jan 2008
By bbjazz (London, England) - See all my reviews
A marvellous first release from the band that truly carries the flame for British Jazz. Although young, they have already established their own sound and know exactly where they're headed. There are no weak links - the rhythm section of bassist Neil Charles and drummer Shaney Forbes are fierce and swing like crazy, and pianist Kit Downes, saxophonist Nathaniel Facey and trumpeter Jay Phelps are always inventive and expressive. But they've got such good tunes to be creative with! Courtney Pine produces and engineers and does an extremely good job. It's no surprise that this album was the critics' favourite for 2007. It's my favourite too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well integrated, 17 May 2008
By Harold Sewell "B23" (Reading, London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
They are obviously young and finding their own style but you can hear the tidy integration of Ornette Coleman and of Steve Coleman - different styles but cogent nontheless. If you are a fan of Kenny G (not the classy Garrett but the other one) then steer well clear of this album. It has twists and turns and is put together to hold interest conceptually, melodically and harmonically.
