This was the first complete recording of Brahms' German Requiem and after sixty years it remains a gem. Karajan frequently chose a slower tempo than many other conductors and this performance is no exception - he takes nine minutes longer over the piece than Simon Rattle in his recent recording on EMI for example. To my ear, this imparts dignity and gravity to the piece - the music 'breathes'. The Vienna Philamonic obviously enjoyed playing for the young maestro and he is well blessed with his soloists, Hans Hotter and Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. The recording was made in the war torn ruins of Vienna in 1947 and this seems to add an extra poignancy to the music as the singers and musicians must have been only too conscious of the losses of the war years.
The Naxos remastering is superb and almost completely eliminates the surface noise from the 78s from which it has been taken.
A moving and satisfying disc - don't miss it.
