1.0 out of 5 stars Fails To Deliver..., 10 Nov 2007
By G. J. Davies "tydal_wolf" (West Midlands - United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
My partner brought me this by mistake as I wanted the PSP version.

Owning both handhelds however, I did put the game on and I was disappointed to say the least:

The "unique" touch screen control is a nice try but just fails to deliver great gameplay. Instead of feeling like your fighting in a wrestling match, you just feel like you are indeed "dragging the stylus across the screen". You seem to spend more time looking at the icons on the screen, as oppose to watching the action take place. It isn't exciting to play at all as a result which ultimately takes away any enjoyment which in my book, what a game is meant to aspire to.

The wrestlers movements aren't controllable in the ring, they just seem to stand in the middle of the ring unless a move is performed.

The graphics aren't bad, but the icons on-screen take your attention off the action.

Overall, I found it greatly disappointing. The control system takes away any fun that could be had, for me. If you own any other consoles then I would strongly recommend that you try that version instead of this one.

I promptly returned it back to the shop this morning which I exchanged for the PSP version which after 10 minutes play, I can say it is worthy of 5 stars alone compared to the DS version.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE THINK ABOUT MY COMMENTS BEFORE BUYING TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT...

1.0 out of 5 stars Please do not waste your money., 10 Feb 2008

In my mind I think that Nintendo should have told software developers that using the touch screen for a game isn't an obligation. Don't get me wrong, some games such as Star Fox Command and Hotel Dusk: Room 215 utilise the touch screen amazingly well. In fact, most games I've played have done a decent job of using both screens to either show more information or to add extra controls.
Smackdown Vs. Raw 2008 however fails completely to utilise both screens with any kind of decency. I'm not quite sure what the developers were thinking when they implemented the truly abhorrent controls, needless to say this is where the game lost its way.
All you get once you're in the ring is 2 wrestlers who don't really walk anywhere and the option to press one of 3 buttons. (Touch screen buttons obviously) After this you sort of wave the wand around trying to mimic the arrows which you're presented with and the wrestler completes the move. Sounds simple, but it isn't. Also it sounds quite awful, which it is.
I find it astonishing that the DS boasts 6 buttons and they haven't been utilised for this game.
With a standard control system this effortlessly great looking game could have been a real contender.
Forget the fact that the game has a small roster...who cares? The limited options don't bother me much either as it's a handheld game. You expect these games to be slimmed down somewhat.
The only positive thing I can say is that the graphics and sounds are very good for such a small system. It's just a shame it doesn't play well
