Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Sequel to the award winning X2: The Threat will introduce a new 3D engine as well as a new story, new ships and a new gameplay to greatly increase the variety in the X-universe. The economy of X: Reunion will be more complex than anything seen in the X-universe before. Factories are being built by NPCs, wars can affect the global economy, NPCs can trade freely and pirates will behave far more realistically.

The TechnologyExtensive development has gone into the X engine, making full use of DirectX 9 technology, to create dramatic visual effects and stunningly realistic starships. Coupled with the massively enhanced A.L. (Artificial Life) system, X: REUNION will present players with an ever changing, evolving universe; where a players actions really can shape the future of the universe. The FeatureNewcomers will enjoy the additions to the already graphically impressive, almost living X-Universe, while veterans can expect new construction options and an improved physics model. The StoryWhat happened so far: While the Argon fleet is stretched almost to breaking point by the continuing attacks from Khaak, a new enemy is stalking the X-universe. What links a mysterious ship with the power to disappear, the ruthless Yaki pirates and a machine left by an ancient species? Its time to strap yourself in, warm up your laser cannon and get some answers. Immerse yourself in a living breathing universe where all your actions have a consequence and the fate of the galaxy rests on your shoulders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, impressive and involving, 24 April 2009
By Mark P. (British Isles) - See all my reviews

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Opening caveat - I was brought up on a diet of Elite, and Frontier: Elite 2. My dreams used to be vivid trips through distant star systems - trading, fighting and exploring - and my imagination helped to fill in the rudimentary graphics that the old games had.

X3 is probably the first modern space sim that I've played for over a decade, and my first thought was "Wow".
My second thought was "This is how I always used to imagine Frontier", and then after playing for a bit, I realised that this game is actually Frontier after it has worked out lots at the gym (perhaps with the use of steroids), and after having cosmetic surgery. It's that amazing.

Be aware that when you first buy it, hop over to the VP Ltd website and download the patches (there are three at the time of writing) as these will resolve a bunch of bugs and registration problems, but once installed, everything seems fine.

There's a lot of other information and resources out there about the game itself, how to get started, and things like that - but be prepared to lose sleep and social time, and to be willing to explore, monitor and manage lucrative trade runs, and to steadily build up your empire.
Many reviewers seem to complain about the steep learning curve; make sure you read the manual - including the 96 page PDF - as it will explain some very important points about the game - for example, that the economy is completely dynamic. Don't expect to find a trading run between a couple of sectors, and be able to set your ships buying and selling forever. As you sell more, you will saturate the market; demand will drop off, and the price will come down - making the run less profitable. You'll then need to investigate other places to sell, or perhaps other goods to transport.

It's all very complicated and clever, but don't let yourself be too daunted early on - there's an incredible wealth of playability and depth here, and building your first space station, capturing your first pirate ship, or finding and claiming your first derelict ship in a remote sector are all extremely gratifying experiences.

Well worth the money if you're into this kind of thing, and have the time and patience to really delve deep...
