Product Description

The Guardian, (Robin Denselow), July 13, 2007

(4 stars) He delights in bringing unexpected rhythms and
instruments together.

Songlines, (Matt Swaine), September/October 2007

(5 stars) Brozman deftly sidesteps pastiche to deliver 12 'musical postcards', bursting with joyful inventiveness. It's a simply sublime album.

5.0 out of 5 stars World of Bob, 11 Aug 2009
By R. A. Johnson "raoul_malaria" (Britain.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you've got here, I'm guessing you know who Bob Brozman is already - traveller, guitar anthropologist, demon slide player, beard wearer, gentleman - so let's cut to the chase. This album is magnificent.

Brozman has a working lifetime of collaborations that put some life into the insipid and patronising phrase "World Music." ("Where are you from?" "I'm Nigerian." "Oh, you're a World Person, then.") Brozman has stickers on his steamer trunk from India, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Hawaii, Reunion. His albums show a restless curiosity about music, and a willingness to learn - they are not colonial exercises; Led Kaapana, Debashish Bhattacharaya, Djeli Moussa Diawara, whoever it is, they get equal billing and space to move.

On this album he decides to collaborate with himself. The Bob Brozman Orchestra is just that - an orchestra of Bobs. This could have been a studious but ponderous and unwieldy process, but Brozman wanted to keep spontaneity at the heart of it, and has succeeded in doing so. The foundation of each track was laid down with a charango or similar, and each subsequent part added as an improvisational response to it. This gives the whole album a wonderful feeling of lightness, off-the-cuff immediacy and sheer delight in the music, as if Bob is indeed enjoying the now-ness of playing simultaneously with a group. It is rich, textured, layered, airy and joyous stuff.

The songs are, as he says himself, "musical postcards" from his travels around the world, and although there are the distinct flavours of blues, Hawaiian guitar, calypso, tango, ska, all played in swaying groves of acoustic instruments, the effect of the whole is indefinable. It really is from the world: says Bob, "a pursuit of the universal principles in all music."

And it's got on the cover twenty-seven Brozmans in fezes. What more could you want? Have you not clicked on 'Buy' yet?
