5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, funny and delicious, 6 Oct 2007
By Antyllus (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Fun film about a male prostitute who learns the valuable lesson about real affection from one of his elderly clients - but not necessarily for the client. A whole bundle of fun to watch with witty and dialogues and voice over and some good performances all round.

Derek Magyar plays the hustler who doesn't believe in love, and isn't interested in sex unless he's being paid for it. He goes by the name of X which signifies his emotional distance to love. X shares his home with two roommates -- Andrew (Darryl Stephens) whom he secretely loves and Joey (Jonathon Trent) the teenager who lusts after X. Enter Gregory (Patrick Bauchau) who hires X for companionship only, holding of sex until X is really attracted to him... ready to go all the way.

Good entertainment; and did the boy get his man? You'll have to watch and see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent gay movie, 25 Sep 2007
Boy Culture actually shys away from gay stereotypes and gives us a thoughtful and compelling drama full of interesting characters, sharp humour and a reliable narrative - a real achievement in gay cinema!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Watchable. , 4 Sep 2007
Boy Culture is actually smart and somewhat entertaining movie. It's a low budget movie; I personally think with the right funds and some more script tweaking it could have been better, but I don't think we ask that from gay-themed movies. Not if 'Another Gay Movie' is anything to go by.

The movie is centered around X who documenting his life. It's really an interesting concept, and for once a movie from TLA actually uses some originality. He's a highly paid male escort, who only caters to the need of a certain list of clients. Funny thing is X didn't mean to go and fall for his roommate.

It's all very non interesting when written down, but the acting wasn't horrendous and have to admit Derek Magyar did a good job. His acting with the some okay writing might have saved this film, for being another 'do not watch' gay-themed movie.

The movie is based on the book written by Matthew Rettenmund.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge the book by its cover!
No offence, but the three superstuds on the cover of 'Boy Culture' suggest this film to be a shallow portrait of well toned bodies, wild parties and explicit sex. Read more

I bought this DVD mostly because I liked the pretty guys on the cover. The expectations were pretty low - gay cinema usually blows (he-he). Read more

I'm a big fan of gay cinema and had been looking forward to getting this DVD for a while. It has some good reviews and the trailer looked fun. I was bitterly disappointed. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars don't be fooled by the title or the trailer - this is a real gem of a film
Forget about "New Queer Cinema" - this is just a damn good movie about a that most human of emotions - the longing to belong. "Only connect" and all that. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Over rated and disapointing
The writing is shocking, very poor and self-gratifying. It has pretentions of high-brow art but falls at the first fence. Read more
