Synopsis

The staggering true story of the struggle for freedom endured by thousands of African-American slaves, whisked from the plantations to fight on the British frontline during the War Of Independence.

DVD Description

Rough Crossings is the astonishing story of the struggle to freedom by thousands of African-American slaves who fled the plantations to fight behind British lines in the American War of Independence. With gripping, powerfully vivid story-telling, Simon Schama follows the escaped blacks into the fires of the war, and into freezing, inhospitable Nova Scotia where many who had served the Crown were betrayed in their promises to receive land at the war's end. Their fate became entwined with British abolitionists: inspirational figures such as Granville Sharp, the flute-playing father-figure of slave freedom, and John Clarkson, the 'Moses' of this great exodus, who accompanied the blacks on their final rough crossing to Africa, wher they hoped that freedom would finally greet them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great companion to an excellent book, 6 Feb 2009
By Fantasy (NY, NY) - See all my reviews
It's a great documentary/drama of Simon Schama's epic-Rough Crossings. The movie captures the key chapters and characters of the book. It's an excellent combination of documentary and drama. The acting and editing are terrific. Watching this movie makes you want to read the book, badly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting history, 5 Nov 2008
By Philip Corneille (BELGIUM & CROATIA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Interesting bit of American history, superb story-telling by the British-born Professor of history Simon Schama. Moreover the situation of Afro-American is a current with the election of Democratic senator Obama on 4th November 2008. After more than two centuries we can finally see the start of a new America... Freedom at last?
