4.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be disappointed... in a good way., 11 Feb 2008
By Ben Collings "mr_cushtie" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a frank and startling exploration of how the frail balance of life can be disturbed in a small village community. By means of a Coen Brothers-esque downward spiralling plot, Night of the Sunflowers describes how one sinister visit sets off a chain of events which changes peoples' lives forever.

This film is quite dry and realistic, with little time for the sentimental. After it had finished I felt quite unsatisfied but not in the least bit cheated; Night of the Sunflowers is clearly not intended to leave the viewer with a warm glow in their midst. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for a slight mid-movie lull in pace, which detracted a tad from the impact of this otherwise excellent and thought provoking film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film, 28 Sep 2007
Saw this in cinema few months back and wanted to see it again - really gets better with each viewing. Beautiful, layered screenplay and story unravels in such subtle and surprising ways.
A revelation of a film. Can't wait to see what the director does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thriller of of the year! , 7 Sep 2007
By C. Barwick "mantletwin" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Take 6 characters of varying sympathy/unsavouriness, an arid rural Spanish setting, an appalling act of violence and mix with betrayal, guilt and murder and you've got the freshest most elaborate and startling European thriller in years.
Forget TELL NO ONE and LIVES OF OTHERS - this is the best European thriller of the year and the best debut feature since the Coen's BLOOD SIMPLE.
It's more Chabrol than Hitchcock,as it has the same dark, sardonic European sensibility about it.
Jorge Sanchez-Cabezudo is a director to watch. He's a bright and bold talent and this film is an absolute stunner.

The DVD is nicely packaged (GREAT artwork - I LOVE that poster image!!) with some nice extras.

Can't recommend this highly enough!!

2.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed
What a disappointing film. It starts so well and the idea is great, but then it just plods and seems to fizzle out. It is a great idea but a big disappointment. Read more
