DVD Description

Series 1 of Hyperdrive rockets off in 2151 and the British have launched a fleet of spaceships to explore the galaxy in the only way the British can. That means with a stiff upper lip and regular tea breaks. Their mission? To export all things British - overpriced supermarkets, housing estates and call centres - to all corners, and to protect Britain's interests in a changing galaxy. At the forefront of this expeditionary force is the HMS Camden Lock, helmed by the irrepressible, if a little tetchy, Commander Henderson. Ably assisted by a crew of misfits (the further they are from Earth the better, quite frankly), the Commander steers his ship through the stars, giving orders from his big swivelly chair.

The team face many challenges throughout series 2, including becoming members of the best space-o-batics team, The Green Javelins, and rescuing an admiral's daughter to take her to university. They are, as ever, always up for the odd battle with hostile alien attackers; be they Queppu warriors, shiny red robots, or the terrifying Engulfers, they'll give it their best shot. Experience the highs, the lows, the anti-gravity failures, the annoying talking mops, and, of course, the wars with alien races. Lots of wars...

Includes bonus disc of special features.

Synopsis
This wacky BBC sci-fi sitcom follows the expeditionary crew on HMS Camden Lock spaceship, ably steered by Commander Henderson, who explore the galaxy exporting all things British along the way. The series stars Nick Frost (Spaced, as Commander Henderson, Kevin Eldon (Smack The Pony, Green Wing) as York and Miranda Hart (Nighty Night) as Teal.

Synopsis

The year is 2151 and Britain has launched an armada of spacecraft to protect her interests in the cosmos. Amongst the ships is HMS Camden Lock, whose crew has been charged with the task of bringing peace to the galaxy, while persuading encountered life forms to relocate their businesses to Peterborough. Led by the overtly optimistic Commander Henderson, a hero to none but himself, and his First Officer, York, a visionary scientist with a penchant for sadism, the rest of this motley crew consists of a staff so eclectic, you’ll be glad they’re not roaming the Earth. A first rate cast and sharp writing combine to create a comedy of inter-galactic proportions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun and doesn't take itself too seriously, 22 Aug 2007
Hyperdrive is silly, funny and clever. The DVD is an excellent package full of commentaries on every episode, with some very insightful background information. The making of documentaries are well put together too. The video diary stuff is a bit light but it always remains entertaining.
The actual episodes vary between action, character stuff and a bit of good old slapstick. By the end of series two you will know the characters well and be rooting for a third series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a balloon full of emotions in a world full of pins, 4 Sep 2007
There are so many good bits in this show. Shoe giving day, the virtual walk in the woods, the dual, the swearing virus, all the stuff with the Dreamgate and of course the agnostic hymns, which had me on the floor. One of the silliest funniest programmes for ages with a terrific cast. The extras are great, too. Don't worry about comparing it with other series; enjoy it for what it is. "As long as they keep attacking one at a time..."

I really wanted to love this, I really did! A sci-fi comedy with good sets, good cast, and good visual effects. But it just doesn't work as well as it should.

The concept is great; the HMS Camden Lock is on a mission to look out for British interests in a changing galaxy. The crew are largely inept and experience aliens and various other space-based tom-foolery.

Nick Frost is the captain, and Kevin Eldon plays York - second in command. With two of Britain's best comedy actors you'd expect this to be a top notch comedy. The acting is fantastic - but the scripts lack something most of the time.

I say most of the time, because sometimes there are great moments - "Attention all crew on Level 15. Don't drink the tap water if it comes out red. The safe colours are blue and orange", "Yes! Right in it's mouth-arse!", and I love the comment made by Teal upon meeting a new alien race when she says that it's convenient that they speak English.

BUT - it just isn't as funny as it should be. I hope that if a 3rd series is commissioned, the writing team is able to produce something more funny and with more pathos than this.

There are some good relationships in it though, Teal is after Henderson, York has a certain chemistry with Sandstrom the Cyborg, and Jeffers is a loveable cybergeek.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun in space!
This is a fun half-comedy/half-parody of other space series. It features Nick Frost leading up a talented cast, and I'm just sorry it only lasted two series!
