4.0 out of 5 stars Stage Struck on Stage Fright, 3 April 2009
By Sam "Sam" (England) - See all my reviews
A start that seems slow but the build-up is terrific with a TOTALLY unexpected plot twist for the grand denouement.
Perfectly cast with Alistair Sim at his best and great acting from Richard Todd.
A good example of Alfred Hitchcock's ability to mix humour with dread. And a finish full of fear!

3.0 out of 5 stars Every time I'm beginning to think what color your eyes are, you disappear!, 16 Aug 2008

One of the more "controversial" films in the Hitchcock cannon, this one certainly gets some critics under the collar. It's difficult to go into too much detail, as it would spoil the plot of the film for those who haven't seen it, but its safe to say that not everything we see in the movie is what it seems.

Not that this should spoil the film too much for viewers. Most would see it as a neat device that keeps you guessing until the end of the film. And whilst it's hardly the greatest Hithcock film you could choose to see, it does have a good few things to commend it.

Chief of these is Jane Wyman, who takes on a number of roles as Eve Todd, who is trying to save her friend Johnny Cooper (Richard Todd) from being sent down for a crime he didn't commit. That the crime was committed by Cooper's lover Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich) and Todd is in love with Cooper herself only complicates matters.

Wyman is excellent as the girl who goes undercover in an attempt to get the evidence to clear Cooper but she's by far the standout of the main cast. Richard Todd is too weak to be of any real interest and Michael Wilding, as the love interest, isn't exactly captivating. Marlene Dietrich gives the kind of performance her fans will love, but others will think sinks into parody. Alistair Sim does give a good comedic turn as Todd's father however.

Stage Fright is a film which I think is unfairly maligned; i think the afforementioned plot device is a nice touch and the film manages to keep up the suspense for large parts of the film, and leaves you guessing all the way. There are certainly worse ways to spend two hours of your life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Murder Makes a Curtain Call, 3 Jun 2008
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Jonathan Cooper (Richard Todd) is in trouble. The police think he murdered the husband of famous actress Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich). And so he does the only thing he can think to do, run to Eve Gill (Jane Wyman) for help. Eve has a bit of a crush on Jonathan, so she quickly spirits him out of town and puts him in hiding.

Befriending Detective Inspector Wilfred Smith (Michael Wilding), Eve learns that the police aren't even looking for another suspect, so she goes undercover as Charlotte's new maid to try to prove the actress killed her own husband. Can she keep up her undercover identity without being discovered? Can she prove that Charlotte really killed her husband?

This lesser known Hitchcock film is still quite good. The pacing is off, and some scenes seem rather pointless and slow to me. But that's my only complaint. The story kept me guessing until the end. I was never on the edge of my seat, but I was certainly engaged. The acting was good. The characters are there to tell the story, but the actors did a good job of bringing them to life with the material they had.

I was a little surprised the film is in Black and White. Shows how little I know about when films became color, I guess. Still, I was engrossed within five minutes, and never noticed again. The film is set in London, so getting to see bits and pieces of that city from the late 40's is interesting as well.

Like many older films, this isn't as slick and dazzling as today's movies. But don't let that stop you. This is a good mystery that will entertain you for a couple hours.
