Originally called the "The Irrefutable Truth about Demons", this horror film comes from New Zealand and stars Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings' Eomer and Doom (Extended Edition) [DVD] [2006]) as Harry Ballard.

Harry's brother Richard had believed he was being chased by demons before he died. Harry, an anthropologist, starts researching and debunking the various cults and their beliefs. Then Harry receives an anonymous video tape of a meeting of one of these cults. The leader, Le Valliant (Jonathon Hendry) is seen threatening Harry's life. Harry laughs it off, even after he receives a visit from a strange young woman called Bennie (Katie Wolfe) - that is until he is kidnapped and drugged by cult members who have an intimate knowledge of his brother's life and death.

Unfortunately, just before the kidnapping he was smoking pot, which the blood tests show, and no-one believes him. He is forced to team up with Bennie who seemingly has the knowledge to protect him from the cult which she once belonged to.

New Zealand know how to do creepy really well, and this is no exception. Enjoyable is probably the wrong word, I found the film engrossing.

It also left me with a number of questions, for example, why doesn't he show the video tape to the police? (it proves what he says), and where does he keep getting the clothes from? One minute he's only got a pair of trousers and a thin jacket, the next he's got a jumper, shirt and shoes.

This is not the best film in the world. But it is good fun - if you're in to demons and the paranormal.
It's also a very good film if you're in to Karl Urban (which I am).
I'm not going to explain the plot as I think it would be impossible, but I'm glad I've seen it and I will watch it again.
I would say it's not for the faint hearted as there's lots of blood and gore and torture sequences which some people may find a bit disturbing.

I knew nothing about this movie when I bought it. I purchased it because I enjoy trashy horrors and the Kiwis are better at them than most. If your're after something in the vein of early Peter Jackson or 'Black Sheep', you will probably be disappointed; this is a touch more subtle than that.

the plot concerns Dr.Harry Ballard, who (since his brother's alleged ritualistic suicide) has become obsessed with exposing Satanic cults. Needless to say, said cults are not very happy about this; and one day Harry receives a threatening video tape in the mail. Things start to go downhill for the poor doctor very quickly after that.

This film is atmospheric, claustrophobic, paranoia inducing and very entertaining. I came away feeling as though I had just watched a David Lynch remake of 'Rosemary's Baby', which is no bad thing.

My only minor gripes are that the gore is pretty weak (I'm just playing devil's advocate there, pun intended. The gore is not really the point, despite the misleading tagline)and the last five seconds, which are totally unnecessary. It would've been better if this had ended in confusion, rather than an obviously tacked on money shot.

On the whole though, great fun and well worth the money. The bad guy is wonderfully creepy and camp, and Benny is my kinda nutjob.

I only bought this because I am a Karl Urban fan but not a fan of horror movies, the storyline started well enough if you like the crazy, zany characters of the Mad Max variety that they seem to like on the other side of the world, which I do, but then the story got a little lost and blurred,not helped by uneven editing, Urban plays Harry Ballard a marked man, a professor of the history of cults hunted by demons lurking in surburbia,he does well and is always a strong actor, and his saviour ex cult member Benny, (Katie Wolfe) starts off ok but begins to grate on you as her Mad Max character becomes increasingly unhinged, the cult leader played by Stephen Hendry is effectively evil and crazy, and the gore that is promised from the reviews is pretty standard by todays standards, (this movie was made in 2000). An example of the mistakes is in a scene where Harry and Benny are escaping her apartment that is being totally destroyed by attacking demons, and the next they are making out in the apartment which is now back in pristine condition, must have had an ITV 60 minute makeover or something! The movie did not find that fine line between true madness, reality and fantasy to make you think were they mad or were there real demons, yet that was the final message for the
viewer to ponder upon briefly before the final scene. It had promise just not quite the finesse it needed to be a good psychological horror story,The saving grace is Karl Urban's performance, other than that it disappointed, hence 2 stars one for the promising beginning, and one for Karl Urban.
